Man City Pursues Alvarez as Arsenal Makes Record Offer
Manchester City have dived into the scramble for Atletico Madrid forward Alvarez, threatening to derail what had looked like a clear path towards a blockbuster Premier League transfer for Arsenal.
The Treble winners have made initial enquiries over a shock loan move to bring the 26-year-old back to the Etihad, according to reports in Spain, just two years after selling him to Atletico in an £82 million deal.
Arsenal ready huge offer – but face resistance
Arsenal have been pushing hardest for Alvarez and are prepared to go big. Very big. The north London club are reportedly willing to sanction a package worth up to €150m (£130m) to take him to the Emirates Stadium, a fee that would place him among the most expensive signings in Premier League history.
Atletico, for their part, are open to that kind of sale. They have made it clear they will not negotiate with Barcelona, the club Alvarez would most like to join, and have instead signalled to Arsenal that a deal is there if the player gives the green light.
That is the problem. Alvarez remains deeply reluctant to return to the Premier League. Despite the growing noise around his future and the pressure building in Madrid, he has not yet encouraged Arsenal to formalise their interest.
Tense week in Madrid
The situation around the striker has spiralled in a matter of days. Alvarez has missed three consecutive training sessions this week, a striking development coming straight after he was loudly booed by sections of the Atletico support last Sunday.
The atmosphere has turned. Atletico want clarity, the player wants Barcelona, and the one option the club have ruled out is doing business with their Catalan rivals. That impasse has dragged England’s heavyweights back into the story.
City’s attacking gap forces rethink
Manchester City had not planned on revisiting Alvarez. Recent departures have changed that. With Omar Marmoush and Savinho both leaving, Enzo Maresca suddenly finds himself short of proven firepower in the final third.
Alvarez, on paper, is the perfect plug for that gap. He knows the club, the league and the demands. In his previous spell at City, he scored 36 goals in 103 appearances and played a crucial role in the historic Treble in his first season under Pep Guardiola.
A loan return would give City a ready-made solution without a nine-figure outlay. It would also throw a serious obstacle in front of Arsenal, who have been working towards a permanent, marquee signing to spearhead their attack.
Financial fight and player doubts
For now, though, this is still a complex puzzle rather than a done deal for any side. Despite City’s interest, formal negotiations between the Premier League champions and Atletico have not yet started. The Spanish club are holding firm on their huge valuation and have little incentive to soften their stance while Arsenal remain prepared to pay big money.
City would need to navigate both Atletico’s demands and the player’s own reluctance to return to England. A late loan agreement would require compromise on all sides: Atletico on structure, City on cost, Alvarez on destination.
As the deadline creeps closer, one question looms over the saga: will money, opportunity and pressure drag Alvarez back to the Premier League, or will his resistance hold long enough for Barcelona to find a way that Atletico say does not exist?
