Ulinzi Stars Secure Crucial 2-1 Victory Over Mathare United
Ulinzi Stars clawed their way off the trapdoor with a gritty 2-1 win over Mathare United on Saturday, a result that may yet define their FKF Premier League season.
For weeks, the soldiers have lived with the shadow of relegation at their backs. This time, they pushed it away. Three precious points lifted them to 15th, out of immediate danger and, crucially, restored something that had been slipping from their grasp: belief.
“The game was not easy. Our plan was to get an early goal but we were not successful in the first half. We managed to come back strongly in the second half and get the result we wanted,” he said, summing up a tense afternoon.
The first half tested their nerve. The early breakthrough they had targeted never arrived, and with every missed chance the stakes grew heavier. Yet the response after the interval told its own story. Ulinzi emerged with more bite, more purpose, and turned pressure into a result that felt bigger than a single league fixture.
“This win means a lot to us because we are fighting not to be relegated. I told the players to play for the badge and forget whether they are civilians or soldiers. What matters is fighting for the badge,” Rio stressed.
That message cut through the tension around the camp. Status, background, rank – all stripped away. Ninety minutes, one crest, one cause.
The players responded with the qualities a relegation fight demands. Rio hailed their determination and resilience, the refusal to wilt under pressure when the game could easily have slipped from them. The 2-1 scoreline reflected that edge: not dominance, but defiance.
There is no time to bask in it.
Tusker FC await on Wednesday, a different kind of test against seasoned campaigners who rarely give anything away. Rio knows the margin for error remains thin and that survival will be decided over a series of such battles, not one emotional win.
“We have another tough match on Wednesday against Tusker and we hope to approach it in a different manner,” he said, already turning his gaze to the next challenge.
The pressure has not gone away. It has simply changed shape. Ulinzi Stars have dragged themselves away from the cliff for now; the question is whether this hard-fought victory becomes a turning point or just a brief pause in their fight to stay in the top flight.
