Palmeiras did not just beat Santos. They seized the first leg of this Copa do Brasil clash and shook it hard, running out 3-0 winners on a night when Neymar watched from the sidelines and the visitors never really laid a glove on them.
The hosts smelled weakness and went straight for it.

It has been a heavy schedule. Neymar had gone the full 90 minutes in three straight outings against Macara, Vasco da Gama and Mirassol, and the staff finally chose to ease his load. On this evidence, Santos paid a high price for that breather.
With Neymar out and Gabigol held back on the bench until the second half, Santos looked blunt. They pushed, they probed, but they rarely pierced. Palmeiras’ back line stayed compact, disciplined and largely untroubled, turning away crosses and forcing hopeful shots from distance. The visitors offered almost nothing in the final third.
Palmeiras, by contrast, carried menace every time they broke.

That hope now has to survive a brutal stretch.
Santos head straight into a fierce away derby against Corinthians in the Campeonato Brasileiro this weekend, a test of character as much as quality after such a bruising defeat. Then comes the return leg at Vila Belmiro, where they must somehow claw back three goals against a Palmeiras side that looked in control in every department.
After that, a trip to Internacional looms. The calendar is not easing up.
For Santos, one thing feels non-negotiable now: Neymar must be back in the starting XI if they are to rediscover any attacking edge and keep their cup campaign alive. The margin is clear, the task is harsh, and the question hangs over Vila Belmiro:
