Thomas Tuchel Considers Promoting Max Dowman to England's Senior Squad
Thomas Tuchel is weighing up a bold move: fast‑tracking 16-year-old Arsenal prodigy Max Dowman into England’s senior setup as injuries rip through his Nations League plans.
The England head coach is considering bringing the teenager into the senior training camp at St George’s Park after a spate of withdrawals left his squad looking thinner than expected ahead of four games against Spain, Czechia and Croatia.
Dowman is already on site with England’s Under-19s, preparing to face the Republic of Ireland on Friday, September 25. If Tuchel gives the green light, the youngster would only need to walk across the complex to join Harry Kane and the rest of the senior group.
A door opens for Dowman
The opportunity has appeared because of a significant casualty list. Declan Rice, Cole Palmer, Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo and Tino Livramento have all pulled out of the upcoming international window with fitness issues, forcing Tuchel and his staff to rethink their plans.
Into that gap steps Dowman, one of the most talked-about teenagers in English football.
The midfielder has been on a steep upward curve at Arsenal. In March, he wrote his name into Premier League history by scoring against Everton at the Emirates Stadium, becoming the youngest goalscorer the competition has ever seen at 16 years and 73 days.
He has not eased off since. Earlier this month he struck twice in Arsenal’s 4-2 Carabao Cup win over Ipswich Town, underlining why coaches inside the club regard him as a special talent and why England’s staff are watching closely.
Dowman did not make the cut for England’s 2026 World Cup squad, a step too soon for a player still learning the senior game. But his form at club level has strengthened the argument that he should be part of Tuchel’s long-term planning, especially with Euro 2028 on the horizon.
There has been talk of a loan move to secure him more minutes this season. Sporting News reporting indicates, though, that Arsenal are more likely to keep him in-house for now, managing his development carefully in north London.
Tuchel’s selection headache
Tuchel’s preparations for the Nations League have been hit from several directions.
Rice has stepped away due to concerns over his workload and fitness, a significant blow in the heart of midfield. Palmer, who had forced his way back into the England picture after missing the World Cup, is out with a minor injury.
Manchester United pair Rashford and Mainoo have also withdrawn, leaving gaps in attack and midfield, while Newcastle defender Livramento completes a list of five absentees that has forced a reshuffle.
The Football Association moved quickly, confirming on Monday that Everton midfielder James Garner and Nottingham Forest playmaker Morgan Gibbs-White have been drafted into the squad.
Those additions give Tuchel fresh options, but Dowman’s potential promotion would be different. This would be a look at the future as much as a solution for the present.
It would also follow the same bold streak that saw Liverpool teenager Rio Ngumoha named in the original senior squad announced on September 18. The message is clear: if you are good enough, you are old enough.
Nations League on the horizon
All of this plays out against a demanding schedule.
England open their 2026-27 Nations League campaign against world champions Spain at Wembley on Saturday, September 26, a marquee fixture to launch a new cycle.
Tuchel’s side then head to Prague to face Czechia on September 29 before travelling to Rijeka to meet Croatia on October 3. They close the window back at Wembley on October 6, with a return game against Czech Republic.
By then, the picture around Dowman will be clearer. Will he still be just the kid lighting up Arsenal’s cup ties, or the teenager who walked into St George’s Park and trained alongside Kane as England reshaped their future on the fly?
