Troy Parrott Shines as Real Betis Defeats Getafe in La Liga

Troy Parrott’s touch of class helped Real Betis edge past Getafe and climb into the thick of the early La Liga title race.

Betis ground out a 1-0 win at the Benito Villamarin on Thursday night, their fifth victory of the campaign, a result that lifts them to third in the table and to within three points of leaders Barcelona after six rounds.

Left out of the action in Monday’s win at Villarreal, Parrott made his return count. The Republic of Ireland striker was heavily involved throughout the first half, twice threatening a breakthrough himself — once with an audacious effort from the centre circle, then with a sharper chance inside the box.

The breakthrough finally came just before the interval. Parrott, spotting the better option, slipped an unselfish, perfectly weighted pass into the path of Abde Ezzalzouli. The winger did the rest, finishing what proved to be the only goal of a tight contest.

Getafe struggled to find a way back, and Betis, roared on by a restless home crowd, managed the game to the finish to bank another three points and keep their early momentum rolling.

Next up is a trip to Deportivo de A Coruna on Sunday evening (5.30pm Irish time), Betis’ final domestic outing before a month-long international break. For Parrott, it is another chance to sharpen his form and rhythm before he turns his attention to Ireland’s UEFA Nations League push.
