Jim Goodwin Returns to Dundee United Dugout After Medical Absence

Jim Goodwin will return to the Dundee United dugout this weekend after a three-week medical absence that briefly jolted Tannadice out of its early-season rhythm.

The 44-year-old manager was taken into hospital at the end of August with an undisclosed condition and only returned home on 1 September. He has been away from day-to-day duties since, watching from a distance as his staff held things together.

That distance closes now. Goodwin is scheduled to handle pre-match media duties on Friday ahead of United’s Scottish Premiership meeting with St Mirren on Saturday, a fixture that immediately throws him back into the sharp end.

During his spell out, assistant Lee Sharp stepped up to lead the side. Goodwin was in the stands earlier this month to see United’s draw with Falkirk, but Sharp carried the responsibility in the technical area.

The caretaker spell has been steady rather than spectacular: one win, one defeat and one draw from three Premiership games under Sharp since Goodwin fell ill. Enough to keep United ticking over. Not enough to quiet every question.

Now the manager is back on the touchline, facing his former club and a league campaign that will not wait for anyone to ease themselves in.
