Clearlake Capital now holds full control of the club after Todd Boehly and Mark Walter sold their 12.83% stakes, handing complete power to the private equity firm that already owned a 61.5% majority. For manager Xabi Alonso, speaking before Friday’s trip to Brentford, the moment felt significant.
“I think it is an important day for the club when there is an important change in the structure of the club, new ownership,” he told reporters on Thursday, framing the development as a clear line in the sand for Chelsea’s future.
Boehly era ends, but praise remains
The Boehly-Walter chapter, launched with a headline-grabbing £2.5 billion takeover in 2022, has been anything but quiet. Heavy spending, rapid turnover and constant scrutiny defined their spell. Yet Alonso, who arrived after the dust of those early months had settled, chose respect over revisionism.
He pointed to the difficult context they inherited, with Chelsea still reeling from sanctions imposed on former owner Roman Abramovich, and stressed the work done to steady the club behind the scenes. That foundation, he suggested, still matters.
“Thanks to the former owners for what they have done. I was not here but I know that they played an important role,” Alonso said, making sure the outgoing investors received public recognition before the page turned.
Then he pivoted to the new reality.
“And now that Behdad is taking more control, or almost full control, I think it is good that the main one is clear.”
One centre of power. One voice at the top. For a club that has felt fragmented at times since 2022, that clarity is exactly what Alonso wants to work under.
Eghbali’s project – and the Madrid meeting
This is not a distant, boardroom-only relationship. Eghbali has become a regular presence at Cobham, and Alonso made it clear that the Clearlake co-founder was instrumental in bringing him to west London in the first place.
“I have a very good relationship with Behdad; he was the one who came to Madrid to explain the project to convince me and we are working well together,” the Chelsea manager revealed.
That visit to Spain, and the detailed presentation of a long-term vision, appears to underpin Alonso’s calm amid the ownership reshuffle. For him, this is not a new project being launched, but a continuation of one already in motion.
“As I have mentioned, this is phase one we have completed in project of the squad. It is good and now we move on together,” he said.
Phase one done. The next step will now unfold under a streamlined hierarchy, with Eghbali’s influence no longer shared with Boehly and Walter.

Alonso, though, kept his cards close to his chest.
“In terms of injuries and in terms of the squad, we are having the last training session tomorrow so no one is ruled out for us for Friday so I prefer to be cautious and we will be waiting until tomorrow to make the final decision on every player,” he said.
