Tottenham Targets Cody Gakpo for Bold Wing Rebuild
Tottenham’s summer spending spree shows no sign of easing, and now the focus has shifted sharply to the flanks. Having already rebuilt the spine of the side, Spurs are preparing a headline double move out wide – with Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo emerging as a leading target.
The numbers already tell a story. Around £237m has gone on Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, heavy investment that has reshaped the back line and midfield. Smart free transfers have filled gaps too, with Martin Dubravka, Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson arriving without a fee.
The message is clear: the next phase is all about firepower.
Savinho deal primed as right-wing priority
On the right, Tottenham have zeroed in on Savinho. The Manchester City winger has told his parent club he wants out and has given Spurs the green light. Negotiations between the clubs have been ongoing for some time, and the outlines of a deal are understood to be in place at around £60m.
Savinho would bring direct running, flair and goals from the right. Tottenham want a mirror threat on the opposite side – and that is where Gakpo enters the frame.
From Kroupi setback to Gakpo opportunity
The original plan up front revolved around Bournemouth’s Eli Junior Kroupi. Spurs were, as revealed by TEAMtalk, less than a day away from lodging an opening bid when disaster struck: a fractured metatarsal. Surgery followed, and with a three-to-four-month lay-off ahead, any move this summer is off the table.
That injury has forced a rethink. Instead of a rising Premier League prospect, Tottenham are now circling a more established name.
Cody Gakpo has quickly moved from background option to serious target. Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano recently flagged the situation, telling Men in Blazers that Spurs “really like the player” and urging observers to keep an eye on the situation over the coming weeks.
The interest has escalated. On Saturday, journalist Paul O’Keefe reported that Gakpo is now “a leading contender” as Tottenham look to bolster their attack. Spurs, already aggressive in this window, are suddenly front and centre in the race for the 27-year-old.
Liverpool name their price
Liverpool are not pretending this will be cheap. According to Anfield Watch, the club have fixed Gakpo’s valuation at around £72m (€85m). That figure is not plucked from thin air; the Reds are said to have used Anthony Gordon’s £69m transfer to Barcelona as a benchmark, nudging their own asking price slightly higher.
For Tottenham, that represents a major outlay on top of the Savinho pursuit. Yet the appeal is obvious.
Gakpo’s primary role is off the left, driving inside on his right foot, but his time on Merseyside has shown he can also lead the line. That dual threat is exactly what Spurs were seeking with Kroupi: a wide forward who can step into the No. 9 role when needed, giving the manager flexibility without sacrificing quality.
A new-look front line taking shape
If Tottenham can land both Savinho and Gakpo, the transformation of their attack would be dramatic. A right-sided livewire from Manchester City and a left-sided, multi-functional Dutch international from Liverpool would give Spurs a fresh, dangerous look in wide areas and cover through the middle.
The pursuit now rests on whether Tottenham are willing to meet Liverpool’s valuation and whether the Anfield hierarchy feel the time is right to cash in.
