Tottenham Pursues Cody Gakpo as Liverpool Stands Firm

Tottenham have set their sights on Cody Gakpo as Roberto De Zerbi’s rebuild gathers pace, but Liverpool are in no mood to make life easy.

The Dutch forward has emerged as one of Spurs’ attacking priorities this summer, according to Sky Sports, with De Zerbi pushing hard for at least one wide forward after shoring up his midfield and defence. He wants pace, goals and versatility out wide. Gakpo ticks every box.

Liverpool, though, are holding their ground. The Netherlands international still has four years left on his deal and remains a key part of their attacking rotation. Any move hinges on one thing: finding a replacement first.

The search is already pointing towards Paris. Liverpool are expected to firm up their interest in Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola, but that chase comes with a brutal price tag. PSG value the 23-year-old at around £145million, a figure that would test even the most ambitious recruitment plans. It is the sort of number that can stall a market on its own.

Gakpo’s situation underlines the tension. He is seen as one of the more seasoned forwards in Andoni Iraola’s squad and offers crucial cover through the middle while Hugo Ekitike recovers from an Achilles injury. That flexibility only strengthens Liverpool’s hand. Letting him go now, without a proven replacement through the door, would leave a hole they can’t easily plug.

Spurs are not limiting their options to Anfield. Manchester City winger Savinho is also on their radar as they look to arm De Zerbi with the kind of wide threats his football demands. One way or another, Tottenham intend to emerge from this window with a very different front line.

While Spurs and Liverpool haggle over possibilities, Arsenal are moving with far more certainty. The Times report that Bruno Guimaraes is closing in on a switch from Newcastle United, with the Brazil midfielder due to undergo a medical ahead of a deal worth close to £80million. If completed, it would be one of the headline moves of the summer and a clear statement of intent from Mikel Arteta’s side in the heart of the pitch.

Newcastle, for their part, have already made one decisive move of their own. The club have completed the signing of goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek after triggering Braga’s £25.7million release clause, a significant outlay on a position they clearly see as central to the next phase of their project.

Fulham are also stepping boldly into the market. They are poised to complete a double raid on Real Madrid, with striker Gonzalo Garcia and midfielder Cesar Palacios both undergoing medicals ahead of permanent transfers, according to Sky Sports.
