Middlesbrough have gone shopping in Croatia for their new midfield runner, and they know exactly what they’re getting: a 22-year-old who never stops moving and loves the penalty area as much as the centre circle.

Rokas Pukstas arrives on Teesside after four full seasons in the Hajduk Split first team, where he played 142 games, scored 27 goals and added 10 assists. All of it in Croatia. No other domestic league experience. Now he walks into the relentlessness of English football with a profile that feels tailor-made for the way Kim Hellberg wants his side to play.

A Specialist in the Late Run

Ask people in Croatia what defines Pukstas and they go straight to his timing.

Croatian football journalist Lovre Nikolac has watched him closely and sees a midfielder who comes alive when the ball is wide and defenders switch off for half a second.

“One of his main qualities is arriving late in the box to provide a goal threat,” Nikolac told BBC Radio Tees.

When crosses come in and centre-backs are locked on to the striker, Pukstas ghosts in behind them. He scores. Or he hoovers up the second ball.

“He arrives late and [also] picks up the scraps sometimes,” Nikolac said. It sounds simple. It isn’t. That knack of judging when to break into the box is a rare commodity, and Boro are betting big on it translating to the Championship.

Dominant in the Air, Relentless on the Ground

Pukstas is not just a runner. He’s a jumper.

“As soon as he steps on the pitch, as soon as there’s an aerial duel, he wins it,” Nikolac said. “He can jump high. He’s very strong and his play with headers is amazing. If there’s one thing that he cannot improve on, I think it’s that.”

That’s a serious claim. In a league built on duels, second balls and set-pieces, a midfielder who attacks everything in the air gives Hellberg another weapon. Corners. Free-kicks. Long diagonals. Pukstas will be expected to be in the thick of all of it.

Then there’s the engine. The thing coaches fall in love with.

“Obviously we can talk about the goals, but it’s what he does off the ball,” Nikolac said. “He just runs. There’s no other way to put it. He never stops and he does everything that’s needed from him.”

This is where the fit with Hellberg really jumps out. The Boro boss demands intensity, aggression, constant movement. Pukstas ticks those boxes. Over and over again.

“And he’s box to box, so up and down the pitch the whole game and never looks tired,” Nikolac added. That description could have been written for the Championship fixture list.

A Work in Progress with the Ball

There is, though, a clear caveat. Pukstas is not a polished technician yet.

Nikolac is blunt about it. “He’s not great at passing, but everything else he’s got spot on. Defending, reading the game, late arrivals, scoring goals,” he said.

So Boro are not signing a deep-lying playmaker. They’re not asking him to dictate tempo or thread impossible through-balls. At least not yet. His job, initially, will be to cover ground, break up play, crash the box and give Hellberg a physically dominant presence between both penalty areas.

“But if he can improve that, then you have a whole player, a true midfielder,” Nikolac said. “You can use him wherever you want. He has the physicality to do anything.”

That’s the upside. If his passing catches up with the rest of his game, Middlesbrough will have far more than just a runner. They’ll have a midfielder who can shape games as well as break them open.

Built for the Boro Demands

Pukstas arrives as a USA under-23 international with a clear identity: tireless, fearless in the air, dangerous when he arrives late into the box. The question now is how quickly he adapts to the speed, the physical edge and the tactical demands of English football.

Hellberg wants energy and aggression from his midfield. Pukstas brings both. The numbers from Croatia show he can contribute in the final third. The scouting reports underline his work without the ball.

If the passing comes, Boro might have found the heartbeat of their midfield for years to come. If it doesn’t, they still have a player built for the chaos and intensity of the league he’s about to walk into.
