Tchouameni Commits to Madrid: Mourinho's Strategic Move
José Mourinho has barely settled back into his office at Valdebebas, but he has already shut the door on one of Manchester United’s biggest transfer hopes.
Real Madrid have moved to lock down Aurélien Tchouameni on a new long-term contract, a decision that effectively ends United’s pursuit of the France international and underlines Mourinho’s plans for the heart of his midfield.
Tchouameni chooses Madrid – and Mourinho
At 26, Tchouameni has reportedly agreed to extend his stay in the Spanish capital by a further five years, committing his peak seasons to the European champions just a month after Mourinho’s return to the Bernabéu dugout.
United had been circling. The club sounded out several midfield options this summer and Tchouameni was high on their list, with concrete approaches made as they tried to reshape a department that has become alarmingly thin.
The timing of the news was striking. Word of Tchouameni’s new deal emerged within hours of United finalising a £50 million agreement with Chelsea for Andrey Santos, whose medical is scheduled for today. Santos is one of several midfielders United have tracked, a group that also includes Alex Scott, Carlos Baleba, Felix Nmecha and Sander Berge.
The sense was clear: United wanted numbers, not just one marquee name.
United’s midfield scramble
The urgency at Old Trafford has only grown. Brazil’s exit from the World Cup has cleared the way for Ederson to undergo a medical, adding another potential piece to United’s rebuild in the middle of the pitch.
Even that might not be enough.
Manuel Ugarte’s injury at the World Cup has ripped another hole in Erik ten Hag’s options, leaving Kobbie Mainoo as the club’s only fully fit central midfielder. United had already been priced out of moves for Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, a reminder of the financial lines they are unwilling – or unable – to cross.
Tchouameni, then, represented the kind of ready-made, elite solution United rarely find available. But he never truly opened the door.
According to RMC Sport, the former Monaco man was adamant he would stay in Madrid, despite interest from elsewhere and particularly from United. Inside the Bernabéu, any talk of cashing in on him was quickly drowned out. Renewing his contract became a priority, not a debate.
For Mourinho, it is a cornerstone decision. For United, it is a closed chapter.

Mourinho will now build with Tchouameni at the base of his side. Madrid have made four signings this summer, but only one of them is a midfielder, and even that addition offers no direct threat to Tchouameni’s starting place.
Bernardo Silva brings creativity, control and experience, but he does not operate in the same role. He will not be the man asked to shield the back four or dictate the game’s rhythm from deep. That job still belongs to Tchouameni, now with the security of a fresh deal and the trust of a manager who values structure and discipline in midfield above almost everything else.
In a single move, Mourinho has both protected his core and denied his former club a key target. United, once again, are left looking elsewhere.
Madrid draw a line over Enzo Fernández
If there was any doubt about Madrid’s midfield strategy, the club erased it with an unusually forceful public statement over Enzo Fernández.
With rumours swirling about interest in the Chelsea and Argentina midfielder, Madrid went on the record to reject the idea outright. The wording left no room for interpretation: no talks, no plans, no intention to pursue a deal.
The club stressed its respect for Fernández and for Chelsea, highlighting what it called an “excellent institutional relationship” and framing the speculation as damaging and misleading. For a club that usually prefers silence to statements, the message was loud.
Madrid are not shopping for another big-name central midfielder. They are backing what they have. They are backing Tchouameni.
United, meanwhile, continue to chase solutions in a market that is shrinking at the top end. With Mourinho reinforcing his midfield fortress in Madrid and slamming one window shut, the question now is simple: where do United turn next?
