Sunderland v Fulham: Black Cats Seek Lift-off at Home

Sunderland step out at the Stadium of Light for the first time in this Premier League season on Sunday, already chasing a response.

Matchday 1 hurt. A 2-1 defeat at Ipswich Town stripped away some of the optimism built over the summer. Nilson Angulo had dragged Sunderland level at Portman Road and there were flashes of fluid attacking play, but loose defending late on left them empty-handed. For a side that had beaten Stade Rennais and RC Lens in pre-season, it was a jolt.

Now comes Fulham, and with it the first real test of the club’s resolve in front of their own crowd.

Injuries, bans and big calls

Regis Le Bris does not get a clean slate to work with.

Simon Adingra, the key left-sided threat, is out for around six weeks after damaging his ankle in pre-season. His direct running and ability to stretch defences will be badly missed, and Sunderland must quickly find a new route to goal down that flank.

Dayann Methalie, one of the headline summer recruits, is also unavailable. The defender serves a one-match suspension carried over from yellow cards picked up in France last season, delaying his Premier League bow.

There is at least one new face ready to be involved. Jules Ahoka has completed his move from Royal Antwerp and is fully registered. He is expected to start on the bench but should offer Le Bris another option as the game wears on.

At the back, there is more encouragement. Nordi Mukiele and Omar Alderete have shaken off the fitness problems that hampered their pre-season. Both are pushing hard to line up alongside Thomas Ballard and Reinildo Mandava, giving the manager a rare luxury: genuine competition in central defence after the lapses at Ipswich.

How Sunderland could line up

Le Bris is unlikely to rip everything up after one defeat, but the shape of his side will be watched closely.

A possible Sunderland XI: Roefs; Meunier, Ballard, Alderete, Mandava; Sadiki, Xhaka; Hume, Le Fee, Angulo; Brobbey.

That setup leans on Granit Xhaka’s authority in midfield, with Le Fee and Angulo asked to knit attacks together behind Brian Brobbey. Without Adingra, the creative burden shifts. Angulo, fresh from his goal on opening day, may again be the one expected to spark something in the final third.
