Harvey Elliott's Liverpool Exit Looms as Valencia Move Gains Momentum

Harvey Elliott’s Liverpool career looks to be heading for the exit door, and fast.

Less than a week after he failed to even make the matchday squad against Newcastle, the 23-year-old is reportedly close to sealing a move away from Anfield, with Valencia pushing hardest for his signature.

From bright hope to bench omission

Elliott returned to Liverpool in the summer after a brutal loan spell at Aston Villa, a season that stalled his momentum and left his future shrouded in uncertainty. Back on Merseyside, he has found himself slipping further from the picture rather than forcing his way into it.

The clearest sign came against Newcastle. Lewis Koumas and James McConnell, both younger and far less experienced, were chosen ahead of him. For a player once viewed as one of the club’s brightest prospects, that was a brutal message.

Manager Andoni Iraola did not hide the reality of the situation when asked about his selection calls before the Nottingham Forest game.

“With Harvey, with [Luke] Chambers, with some of the players that I decided – because I can only choose 20 – to leave out, it’s a matter of finding the balance on the bench,” he said.

“In Harvey’s case, he’s trying, he’s improving every week, but I still prefer other options.

“Probably I was in doubt with James McConnell in terms of getting into the squad, and I decided to put James in the squad.

“But it’s another new week, new chances for everyone, and they have to keep that mentality.”

The words were diplomatic. The implications were not. Elliott is no longer among Iraola’s trusted options.

Valencia move gathers pace

That backdrop has opened the door for Valencia. Multiple reports state Elliott has agreed personal terms with the Spanish club after positive talks, with only the structure of the deal still unclear.

A loan is on the table. A permanent transfer feels more likely.

Elliott is into the final 12 months of his Liverpool contract. From the club’s perspective, this is the last realistic chance to secure a fee for a player whose role has shrunk dramatically over the past year.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that Valencia have already begun negotiations with Liverpool, looking to strike a club-to-club agreement. The framework is being discussed; the direction of travel is obvious.

Squeezed out at Anfield

Elliott’s slide down the pecking order has not happened in isolation. The arrival of Florian Wirtz last summer changed the dynamic in attacking midfield, tightening competition in the very areas Elliott prefers to operate.

Any lingering hope of reinventing himself as a wide option has also taken a hit, with Bradley Barcola on his way to bolster Liverpool’s flank options. Every new signing has nudged Elliott further toward the margins.

From a long-term project to a squad afterthought, his Liverpool story has turned sharply. Now Valencia offer something Liverpool cannot: a fresh start, a central role, and the chance to rebuild a career that once promised so much.

The only question left is not whether he goes, but whether Liverpool choose to let him walk out on loan again – or close the book on his Anfield chapter for good.
