Shrewsbury Town Sign Michael Golding on Loan from Leicester City

Shrewsbury Town have moved to plug their midfield gap by bringing in Leicester City youngster Michael Golding on loan for the rest of the season.

The 20-year-old, once tipped as one of the brightest prospects in Chelsea’s academy, came through the ranks at Stamford Bridge and made his senior debut as a substitute in an FA Cup tie in January 2024. That was his only first-team outing for the Blues before Leicester stepped in.

The Foxes paid around £4m for Golding in the summer of 2024, tying him down to what was described as a long-term contract. He had to be patient at the King Power, finally making his debut at the end of the 2024-25 campaign as City slid out of the Premier League.

Now comes a different kind of pressure. League One, a club in need, and a point to prove.

Golding becomes Shrewsbury’s ninth signing of the current window and arrives with a clear task: help cover the loss of Jack Price. The experienced midfielder is sidelined for several weeks with a hamstring injury, leaving a sizeable hole in the centre of the pitch.

Head Coach Comments

Town head coach Gavin Cowan made no secret of how long the club have tracked their new arrival.

“We're really excited and appreciative of Leicester, how they have accommodated the move,” Cowan told BBC Radio Shropshire. “He's been on our radar for a while. He's a young guy who wants to reignite his career and will be a really good addition.”

The move underlines Shrewsbury’s intent to add energy and technical quality in midfield rather than simply patch the problem. Golding, still early in his senior journey, now has a platform to play regular football and rebuild momentum after a stop-start introduction at Leicester.

And the recruitment drive may not be finished.

BBC Radio Shropshire report that Town are close to agreeing a loan deal for Burnley striker Kian McMahon-Brown. The forward, named Burnley’s academy player of the year last season, signed a two-year contract extension in the summer and is highly regarded at Turf Moor, where former Shrewsbury chief executive Matt Williams now serves as chief operating officer.

If that deal is completed, Cowan will have a fresh option up front to go with his new midfield spark. For a club reshaping its squad on the fly, these are the kind of calculated gambles that can shift the feel of a season.
