Santos Elimination from Copa do Brasil: Neymar's Fury Over Pitch Conditions
The night Santos crashed out of the Copa do Brasil should have been about football. Instead, it ended with fury, injuries and a public war of words over a torn-up pitch.
A 0-0 draw at Vila Belmiro confirmed Santos’ quarter-final elimination to arch-rivals Palmeiras, who had already done the real damage with a 3-0 win in the first leg at Nubank Parque. The result hurt. The scenes around it stung even more.
Neymar injured – and furious
Right on the stroke of half-time, the air went out of the stadium. Neymar pulled up, clutching his right hamstring, and limped off. For a team already chasing a lost cause, it felt like a gut punch.
The forward didn’t wait long to point the finger.
On Instagram, Neymar unloaded on the Vila Belmiro grounds staff in a blistering rant.
“I want to congratulate our groundsman at Vila Belmiro. Yesterday, it was the worst pitch the stadium has ever seen, riddled with holes, because they had to uncompact it the day before the match. Unbelievable!” he wrote.
“On top of playing against the opposition, we were battling the pitch itself. And to top it all off, we had to put in extra effort during acceleration and braking because the surface was so uneven. It’s no wonder three players got injured in the first half. Congratulations, then... What a load of crap job.”
The anger was raw. The accusation clear: the surface had betrayed the players.
A chaotic first half backs his claims
Neymar was not the only casualty.
Lucas Veríssimo also failed to see out the first half, forced off with an ankle injury. Barreal then became the third player to succumb to physical problems before the break, turning a tense knockout tie into a running tally of damaged bodies.
Every misstep, every awkward landing, seemed to fuel Neymar’s argument that the pitch had become an opponent in its own right.
According to ESPN, the hamstring issue now leaves Neymar as a major doubt for Sunday’s Brasileiro clash with Internacional at Beira-Rio. The expectation is that he will not feature.
In his place, Arthur is set to step into the spotlight. The youngster is likely to make his debut in an advanced role, operating almost as a classic number 10 – a huge responsibility, and a very different kind of storyline to the one Santos had hoped to be writing this week.
Palmeiras twist the knife
If Santos were seething, Palmeiras were smiling – and they made sure everyone saw it.
Never shy when it comes to prodding a rival, the Alviverde social media team seized on Neymar’s complaints and turned them into ammunition. They drew a sharp contrast between the battered natural grass at Vila Belmiro and their own synthetic surface at Nubank Parque, where the first leg had been played without incident.
“We want to congratulate those responsible for the Nubank Parque field... No matter the day, the grass is always perfect and without holes, because it is cared for daily. You can believe it!” the club posted on Thursday.
Then came the real twist of the knife, a post that deliberately echoed Neymar’s words back at him.
“Besides offering a good playing field for the opponent, our athletes feel safer because, during runs, the surface is always even. It’s no coincidence that Palmeiras is the Serie A club with the fewest injuries in the last five years... Congratulations, you know? Great job.”
The message was unmistakable: while Santos wrestled with their own grass and their own anger, Palmeiras were moving on, proud of their pitch, their methods and their place in the rivalry.
Santos, by contrast, leave the Copa do Brasil with bruised pride, a growing injury list and a star player at war with his own home ground.
