Arsenal Faces Key Injury Concerns Ahead of Chelsea Clash
Arsenal’s perfect start to the season has met its first real wobble before a ball is even kicked this weekend.
With a London derby against Xabi Alonso’s free-scoring Chelsea looming, The Sun reports that Mikel Arteta’s side were hit by a double scare at London Colney on Thursday: no Bruno Guimaraes, no Cristhian Mosquera in open training.
For a team that has glided through its opening two league games, that’s a jolt.
Guimaraes worry grows before first big test
Bruno Guimaraes arrived in North London as the marquee signing of the summer, a £75 million statement plucked from Newcastle United to anchor Arsenal’s midfield and sharpen their title credentials.
He has barely got going.
A stubborn groin problem kept the Brazilian out of the Premier League opener against Coventry City, and although he returned with a 19-minute cameo off the bench in Monday’s win at Aston Villa, Arteta has handled him like fine glass ever since.
Arsenal have the numbers in midfield. That much is clear. But they do not have another Bruno.
Arteta has been meticulous in managing his minutes, leaning on the club’s depth and insisting on a cautious approach. The logic is obvious: this is a long season, and Arsenal expect to be in every race that matters. Risking their new midfield hub in August would be reckless.
Yet the timing could hardly be worse. A London derby, Chelsea unbeaten, Alonso already shaping them into a slick, attacking unit. Losing Guimaraes for that kind of tactical chess match would strip Arsenal of a key weapon in controlling tempo and transitions.
Mosquera setback tightens defensive squeeze
If Guimaraes is a concern, Mosquera is close to a problem.
The Spanish defender limped out of Monday night’s victory at Villa Park in the closing stages, replaced by Ezri Konsa in the 79th minute. At the time, Arteta played it down.
“He’s fine, but he was feeling like he was about to have something, and that’s why we have the bench that we have, and that’s why we had to bring in Ezri,” the Arsenal manager said after the game.
Those words sounded reassuring on Monday. His absence from training on Thursday tells a different story.
Should the 22-year-old be ruled out for Sunday, the path is clear for Konsa to step into the starting XI and make his full home debut at the Emirates. The former Aston Villa man, signed for £51 million last month, is the obvious replacement and was bought for precisely this kind of moment.
Even so, the margins at the back are shrinking.
Depth already under strain
Mosquera and Guimaraes are not the only names on the watchlist.
Jurrien Timber remains a doubt for the weekend, still battling to reach full fitness, while William Saliba is sidelined for an extended spell after an injury aggravated during the World Cup. For all the talk of Arsenal’s improved squad depth, the defensive core is being stretched earlier than Arteta would have liked.
The contrast with their results is striking. On paper, everything looks serene.
Arsenal opened the campaign with a smooth 3-0 win over Coventry City, then dug in to edge Aston Villa 1-0. Chelsea, for their part, have gone the other way: chaos, goals, and six points. A 3-2 win over Fulham, a breathless 4-3 victory against Brighton. Two games, two wins, and plenty of warning signs for any defence that isn’t at full strength.
So here Arsenal stand: perfect on the table, patched up on the training ground, and walking into a derby where the smallest detail could tilt the balance.
If Guimaraes doesn’t make it and Mosquera joins him on the sidelines, we may find out very quickly just how deep this squad really is.
