Real Madrid Completes Summer Transfer Window with Mourinho
Real Madrid’s summer of upheaval is officially over. After weeks of noise, names and negotiations, the European giants have decided: no more signings.
With the deadline looming on Tuesday, 1 September at midnight, journalist Jose Felix Diaz, speaking via Ruben Martin’s YouTube channel, reports that the club will not make any further additions to Jose Mourinho’s squad. For all the speculation about a new midfielder and a left-footed centre-back, the market is closed at the Bernabeu – at least for arrivals.
Mourinho’s new Madrid takes shape
The first big change came on the touchline. Mourinho’s appointment set the tone for a ruthless rebuild, and Real Madrid moved quickly to hand him a squad that looks very different to last season’s.
Six major signings have walked through the doors of Valdebebas.
The overhaul began with World Cup winner Marc Cucurella, followed by Ibrahima Konate to strengthen the back line, Bernardo Silva to add guile and control, and Denzel Dumfries to power up the right flank. Then came the headline act.
Yan Diomande, at just 19, arrived as the club’s marquee signing and the most expensive player in Real Madrid’s history. The Ivorian winger’s deal is worth €140 million including add-ons, a staggering fee that underlines the club’s belief in his potential and their desire to refresh the attack with youth and explosiveness.
On deadline-eve, Real Madrid also quietly secured the signature of another 19-year-old, midfielder Sergio Martinez from Racing Santander. He will start with Castilla, but his arrival continues the pattern: big money at the top of the squad, and young talent stacked underneath.
Targets missed, plans adjusted
The recruitment drive could easily have gone even further.
Real Madrid pushed to land a top-level midfielder, with Rodri identified as the priority. Instead, the Spain international chose to join arch-rivals FC Barcelona, a significant blow to Mourinho’s plans in the centre of the pitch and a symbolic defeat in the market.
At the back, Mourinho wanted a left-footed centre-back to balance his defence. Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni was his preferred option. Talks never advanced to a successful conclusion, and with time almost gone, that gap will remain unfilled.
So the club has drawn a line under its business. Six major signings, one Castilla addition, and a clear message: this is the squad Mourinho will take into the season.
Doors closed for signings, slightly open for exits
While no one else will be coming in, the story is different on the way out.
Diaz reports that Real Madrid are not ruling out departures before the window shuts. The club has been actively trying to move on Eduardo Camavinga, who has been heavily linked with a switch to the Premier League. The Frenchman, though, has so far refused to leave, standing firm despite the uncertainty over his role under Mourinho.
Raul Asencio finds himself in a similar position. The academy product does not feature prominently in Mourinho’s plans and has been made available for a transfer. Yet he, too, has shown reluctance to walk away from the club that formed him.
With the clock ticking, Madrid could still trim the squad, but only if the players involved agree. For now, the only certainty is that the incoming business is done.
Mourinho must go into battle with what he has. Is it enough to wrest control back from Barcelona and the rest of Europe, or will the names that got away define this season as much as the ones who arrived?
