Police Investigate Incident Involving Cardiff Defender Krystian Bielik
Police are investigating a flashpoint involving Cardiff City defender Krystian Bielik and a home supporter during Portsmouth’s 2-0 Championship win at Fratton Park on Saturday.
The incident unfolded late in the second half as Bielik went to retrieve the ball from the stands. As he stepped towards the crowd, a confrontation broke out, leading to what witnesses described as a physical altercation with a fan.
Hampshire Police were alerted while the match was still in progress and began an investigation immediately after the final whistle.
In a statement, police said: "We can confirm that we are investigating an incident in which a teenage boy was reportedly the victim of a common assault during the football match at Fratton Park. Our enquiries are ongoing."
From the home end, several Portsmouth supporters gestured towards the pitch, indicating they believed the fan had been grabbed by the throat.
Cardiff head coach Brian Barry-Murphy later claimed Bielik had "got slapped in the face". Video clips circulating on social media appeared to show the Poland international grabbing a young fan around his upper body as the situation escalated.
The tension did not end there. In the aftermath of the clash, another supporter threw a ball at the head of Cardiff defender Perry Ng. Both fans involved were removed from the stadium.
Portsmouth head coach John Mousinho apologised to the Cardiff players after the game.
Pompey then issued a statement: "Portsmouth Football Club are aware of supporter concerns regarding the incident involving a young fan and an opposition player at yesterday's match at Fratton Park.
"As this remains a safeguarding matter and is currently under investigation by both the club and the police, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further on the circumstances at this time.
"However, we are aware that a number of claims and assertions are circulating on social media. We would urge caution against speculation while enquiries are ongoing.
"The welfare and safeguarding of young people are of paramount importance to Portsmouth Football Club. We will continue to liaise with the relevant parties as enquiries progress.
"No further comment will be made at this stage while investigations remain ongoing."
The Football Association has been made aware of the incident and will study the referee’s report before deciding whether to pursue any disciplinary action.
Cardiff City, for their part, backed the handling of the flashpoint on the day, saying: "We are satisfied with the way that match officials dealt with the situation during the game, having been in full view of it. Player protection will always be of paramount importance to us."
With police, club and FA enquiries all under way, the fallout from a fiery few seconds at the touchline now stretches well beyond the 90 minutes.
