Police Investigate Incident Involving Cardiff City Defender and Young Fan
Police have launched an investigation after a flashpoint between Cardiff City defender Krystian Bielik and home supporters marred Portsmouth’s 2-0 Championship win at Fratton Park on Saturday.
The incident unfolded late in the second half as Bielik went to retrieve the ball from the stands. What should have been a routine moment turned ugly. Cardiff head coach Brian Barry-Murphy said afterwards that his player had “got slapped in the face”, while footage shared on social media appeared to show the Poland international grabbing a young fan around the upper body.
From there, the atmosphere turned sour.
Hampshire Police confirmed on Sunday that they are looking into an allegation of assault involving a teenage boy.
“We can confirm that we are investigating an incident in which a teenage boy was reportedly the victim of a common assault during the football match at Fratton Park. Our enquiries are ongoing,” a police statement read.
Several Portsmouth fans near the incident made gestures suggesting they believed the youngster had been grabbed by the throat. Emotions flared. Another supporter then launched a ball at the head of Cardiff defender Perry Ng. Both fans were removed from the stadium.
After the final whistle, Portsmouth head coach John Mousinho went to Cardiff’s players to apologise for the behaviour of those supporters.
Club and police investigations under way
Portsmouth moved quickly to address the situation publicly, stressing both the seriousness of the matter and the need for restraint while the facts are established.
“Portsmouth Football Club are aware of supporter concerns regarding the incident involving a young fan and an opposition player at yesterday's match at Fratton Park,” the club said in a statement.
“As this remains a safeguarding matter and is currently under investigation by both the club and the police, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further on the circumstances at this time.
“However, we are aware that a number of claims and assertions are circulating on social media. We would urge caution against speculation while enquiries are ongoing.
“The welfare and safeguarding of young people are of paramount importance to Portsmouth Football Club. We will continue to liaise with the relevant parties as enquiries progress.
“No further comment will be made at this stage while investigations remain ongoing.”
The Football Association has been made aware of the incident and will study the referee’s report before deciding whether to open its own disciplinary proceedings.
Cardiff, for their part, backed the officials’ handling of the flashpoint on the day.
“We are satisfied with the way that match officials dealt with the situation during the game, having been in full view of it. Player protection will always be of paramount importance to us,” the Welsh club said.
A high-tempo early-season fixture, a charged away end, a young fan at the centre of a police investigation and an international defender under scrutiny — what began as a straightforward league game may now have repercussions that stretch well beyond the final scoreline.
