Pierre-Emile Højbjerg has been stripped of the Marseille captaincy after refusing a move to Newcastle United, triggering a power struggle behind the scenes at the Ligue 1 club.

The Danish midfielder, seen by Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle as the ideal replacement for Bruno Guimarães, has made it clear he does not want the switch to St James’ Park. That stance has infuriated Marseille owner Frank McCourt, who had been ready to cash in.

Marseille were prepared to accept a £15 million offer from Newcastle, with Magpies sporting director Ross Wilson driving the deal from the English side’s end. The numbers were in place. The path looked clear. The player said no.

Against Atletico Madrid yesterday, Højbjerg kept his place in the starting XI and completed the match. What he did not keep was the armband. That went instead to Timothy Weah, a visible signal of where the club’s hierarchy now stands on their former captain.

On the touchline, Bruno Genesio had to live with a call that was not his own.

“It is a decision that was dictated to me by the club's management,” the Marseille manager admitted after the game. “If I want to be completely frank, and I will be, it is not a decision that I agree with. But I am an employee, I have to comply with certain obligations. We did it.”

The Premier League club have already moved on to other targets. A three-year contract has been put in front of Bayern Munich midfielder João Palhinha, yet even that pursuit is running into resistance. The Portugal international’s preference is to join Aston Villa instead.
