Pape Matar Sarr did not just start for Juventus on Thursday night. He announced himself.
Thrown in from the first minute for his full debut, the 21-year-old midfielder played all 90 as Juventus crushed NEC 5-0 in the Europa League, and walked off the pitch with his coach purring over the performance.
Luciano Spalletti, speaking after the game, did not hold back.
“Sarr is a thoroughbred because he has quality in his running,” the Juventus coach said in his post-match press conference. “He had a good game tonight, especially considering it was his first. He also responded to me a couple of times, so that's positive. Players with these qualities can sometimes lack a bit of sharpness, but he did many things well. He was always involved with the team and close to the ball. I'm happy with his performance.”
From bench cameo to commanding start
The outing against NEC came just days after Sarr’s first taste of Serie A in a Juventus shirt. He had made his debut the previous weekend, coming off the bench against Sassuolo at Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia, a brief introduction in a new league and a new environment.
This time, under the lights in Turin, there was no easing in. No hiding place. Just a clear message from Spalletti: you start, you belong.
Sarr responded with a display that mixed composure with relentless energy. He knitted play, pressed aggressively and rarely wasted the ball.

According to Sofascore, Sarr completed 98% of his passes, hitting 100% accuracy in the opposition half. He recorded 70 touches, a healthy volume for a midfielder on his first start, and won three of his eight ground duels.
Not a flawless performance, but one that showed personality and reliability on the ball in a team that dominated the game.
The Italian sports dailies were a little more restrained. Gazzetta dello Sport handed him a 6.5 out of 10, while Tuttosport and Corriere dello Sport both settled on a 6. Respectable, solid marks for a player still finding his feet in a new tactical system and a demanding environment.
A deadline-day gamble with upside
Sarr’s rapid integration is all the more striking when you consider how recently he arrived.
Juventus brought him in from Tottenham on deadline day, securing an initial loan with an option to buy. The Bianconeri paid €2.5 million for the loan until the end of the season and hold a €27.5 million option to make the move permanent.
For a club carefully managing its finances while trying to refresh the squad, that structure matters. Performances like Thursday night’s make the numbers look less like a risk and more like an opportunity.
Spalletti has already shown he trusts Sarr enough to use him in Serie A and in Europe within the space of a week. The coach sees a “thoroughbred” in midfield. Now the question is simple: how quickly will Sarr turn that early promise into a permanent place in Juventus’ future?
