JJ Gabriel's Future in Doubt as European Clubs Show Interest
JJ Gabriel’s future at Manchester United has been thrown into fresh doubt after the highly rated teenager travelled to Barcelona while some of Europe’s biggest clubs battle to sign him.
The 15-year-old forward has informed United he wants his registration cancelled with immediate effect, a move that would effectively sever his formal ties with the club at academy level.
Real Madrid have already registered strong interest, while Bayern Munich, Paris St-Germain and Barcelona are all understood to be pushing to position themselves for his signature. Gabriel left the UK on Thursday, initially heading to France, and is now in Barcelona as the saga gathers pace.
United’s grip on the situation rests on paperwork. If the club decide to hold on to the London-born youngster’s registration, he would be blocked from joining another English side until the end of the season. That would not stop a move abroad, though, if he can secure an EU passport.
Gabriel is exploring that route. He could be eligible through his father, a former Republic of Ireland international, or his mother, who has Greek-Cypriot heritage. An EU passport would open the door for him to sign for a club in the European Union as soon as he turns 16 on 6 October.
The tension has been building for weeks.
Gabriel has not trained with United since 10 September, the night he announced himself in Europe with a hat-trick on his Uefa Youth League debut. Tournament regulations mean he cannot represent any club other than United in this season’s competition, but that explosive performance only heightened outside interest and internal frustration.
Those close to the player were left angered when United chose not to register him for their Champions League opener against Sabah FK, a game Michael Carrick’s side won 4-0. For a teenager already on the radar of Europe’s elite, the omission was seen as a significant snub.
Carrick, speaking on Friday ahead of United’s Premier League clash with Fulham, was pressed again on the situation.
"He's a young boy, JJ, and I think it's important we don't play anything out here," he said. "With the exposure and scrutiny and everything, you got to be careful and be sensible and think of him as much as anything.
"The situation will work itself out, whatever way it's going to work itself out. Making sure he's OK is the important thing."
On the pitch, Gabriel had started the season brightly. He scored in each of his first two Premier League 2 appearances for United, underlining why Europe’s heavyweights have been tracking his progress so closely. Yet he will play no part for the club’s second string against Brentford at Leigh Sports Village on Friday, another clear sign of the stand-off.
