Nicolo Tresoldi's Dilemma: Germany or Italy?

Nicolo Tresoldi is in no rush to choose between the two flags that shape his story.

The Club Brugge forward, capped 24 times for Germany at U21 level, is still weighing up whether his senior future lies with the country that formed him as a footballer or with Italy, the nation of his birth.

According to Kicker, Germany U21 coach Antonio Di Salvo has spoken directly with the 22-year-old about the dilemma.

"This is not a question that needs to be asked of me, but I have spoken to him and he said that he still can't make a decision," Di Salvo said.

For now, Germany keeps him. Tresoldi has decided to continue with the U21s, a small but significant commitment in a long-running tug of war.

"And that is a great sign for us," Di Salvo added, welcoming the choice, even if it stops short of a definitive pledge for the senior side.

The coach framed Tresoldi’s hesitation as a symptom of a changing football landscape, not a lack of conviction.

"I think the world has changed. 20 or 30 years ago, players didn't have to make these decisions at all," he said. "But the world has become more global, and many players have the opportunity to play for a second or even a third country. If they need time, you have to give them that time."

Tresoldi’s background explains the crossroads. Born in Cagliari, he is the son of an Italian father and an Argentine mother of Italian descent. At 13, he moved with his family to Germany, joined Hannover 96 and eventually acquired German citizenship.

Those roots now give him options that many of the previous generation never had. For Germany, his continued presence with the U21s is encouragement. For Italy, the door is still wide open.

The decision, when it finally comes, will say as much about modern football identity as it does about one young striker’s career.
