Chelsea's Joao Pedro Injury Update: Fitness Concerns Ahead of International Break
Chelsea are facing an anxious wait over Joao Pedro’s fitness after the in-form forward pulled out of Brazil’s squad for the upcoming international break with a knee injury.
The Brazilian has been one of the few bright sparks in Chelsea’s stuttering start, ripping into the new campaign with three goals and three assists in just four league games. He has quickly become central to Xabi Alonso’s attacking blueprint.
That is what made last weekend’s drama against Hull City so worrying. Joao Pedro is believed to have taken a knock to his knee during the 2-2 draw, yet he still stayed on and struck a late equaliser for the Blues. The goal masked the problem. The pain did not.
He sat out training in the days that followed, as did Reece James, and neither made it onto the pitch for Friday night’s bruising 3-0 defeat away at Brentford. Without him, Chelsea’s attack lost its edge.
Danny Welbeck stepped in at the Gtech Community Stadium but could not provide the same spark. He failed to score and struggled to mirror Joao Pedro’s understanding with Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer, combinations that have underpinned Chelsea’s best attacking spells so far.
Alonso has offered little clarity on the extent of the injury. Before the Brentford game, he kept his answers tight, admitting only that Joao Pedro would be given as long as possible to prove his fitness before the trip across west London. No timelines, no specifics.
Behind the scenes, though, the outlook is more encouraging for Chelsea.
Reports in Brazil from ESPN indicate Joao Pedro is likely to be out for around three weeks. That rules him out of the Selecao’s two upcoming friendlies against Australia but, crucially for his club, points towards a return once the Premier League resumes next month.
If his recovery runs to schedule, he should be ready to lead the line when Chelsea host Bournemouth after the break.
By then, it cannot just be a welcome boost. With the Blues now winless in three league matches, it has to be a turning point.
