Newcastle United Signs Leanne Kiernan to Enhance Attack

Newcastle United have moved to sharpen their attacking edge with the signing of Republic of Ireland forward Leanne Kiernan from Liverpool for an undisclosed fee.

The 27-year-old arrives on Tyneside after five years on Merseyside, where she made 76 appearances and scored 23 goals for the Reds. Her final months at Liverpool were spent on loan at Nottingham Forest in the Barclays Women’s Championship, a spell that kept her sharp and visible to suitors.

Now she has her step into a new project.

“It was a dream of mine to come and play professionally and to go to a club like Newcastle, it really felt right when the contact came in,” Kiernan said. The excitement is clear. “I’m really excited. I’m looking forward to a fresh start and meeting the fans.”

Kiernan describes herself as a forward who thrives on space and direct running. “I would say I’m a quick attacker in behind, so I feel like I can bring my strengths and hopefully score loads of goal to help the team out,” she added, offering a neat summary of exactly what Newcastle hope she will deliver.

After leaving Shelbourne in 2018, Kiernan joined West Ham United, where she clocked up 40 appearances over three years and learned the grind of top-flight English football. Her international record underlines that pedigree. Since making her debut for Ireland in 2016, Kiernan has earned 38 caps, becoming a regular presence in the national setup and a familiar name on team sheets in major qualifying campaigns.
