Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo is the latest name to move into focus. The 25-year-old Mozambique international has drawn interest from a cluster of Premier League clubs, with Newcastle among those stepping up their scouting in recent weeks ahead of the winter window.

According to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, Newcastle, Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Brighton have all checked on Catamo, while Aston Villa have also continued to monitor his situation. The list of admirers is growing, and so is the player’s case.

Catamo has opened the season sharply for Sporting, with two goals and three assists in his first seven appearances. It’s the kind of start that gets recruitment departments talking and forces clubs to move from casual watching to serious analysis.

Sporting’s stance: pay the clause

Newcastle are not arriving late to this story. Bailey reports that several clubs made contact with Catamo’s camp earlier in the summer and have kept tabs on him ever since. The problem sits elsewhere.

Sporting’s position is blunt. Sunderland found that out the hard way.

The Black Cats made Catamo a leading target in the last window but hit a brick wall when it came to negotiations. Sporting refused to entertain a deal below the player’s €60 million (£51 million) release clause and held that line, a figure Sunderland were simply not prepared to meet.

Sunderland’s interest has not disappeared, but the landscape has changed. They now face competition from Newcastle, Brentford, Forest, Brighton and Villa, with the Premier League suddenly crowding around the same talent.

Player keen on Premier League move

One element does tilt the situation toward England. Catamo is understood to be more than open to a move to the Premier League, attracted by the chance to test himself in what many regard as the toughest league in the world.

That willingness does not change Sporting’s leverage, but it matters. It gives English clubs encouragement to keep watching, keep talking, keep planning.

What it does not do, at least for now, is guarantee any movement on price.

There is currently no indication that Newcastle have submitted an offer or opened formal negotiations with Sporting. The key question hangs over the Portuguese club’s stance: will they soften that €60 million demand in January, or force suitors to trigger the full release clause?

If Sporting hold firm, any club moving for Catamo will have to decide whether a winger with strong early-season form and room to grow is worth a £51 million outlay in the middle of the campaign. If they blink, the race for his signature could turn from background noise into one of January’s defining transfer battles.
