Brian Sorensen is set for a swift return to the international stage, with the former Everton manager poised to join the Republic of Ireland women’s set-up for their crucial Women’s World Cup play-off campaign later this year.

Sorensen is expected to come in as assistant coach, forming part of a refreshed backroom team alongside Liverpool coach Amber Whiteley. It marks a significant appointment for Ireland as they gear up for a high-pressure route to the finals.

The Dane will combine the role with his current position as technical director of Aston Villa Women, a post he is understood to be retaining. He will link up with the Republic of Ireland squad during international windows, adding another layer of top-level experience to the dugout.

Sorensen will work under manager Carla Ward, who went head-to-head with his Everton side in the Women’s Super League during her time in charge of Villa.
