Moisés Caicedo's Injury Setback: Impact on Chelsea vs Arsenal

Moisés Caicedo was nowhere to be seen when Chelsea’s team sheet dropped for their Premier League clash with Arsenal on Sunday, Sept. 6 – a significant setback for Xabi Alonso’s side just as they thought they were getting their midfield anchor back.

The Ecuador international had only just returned from injury, but his stop-start beginning to the season continued in frustrating fashion. His return, though, was fleeting. Caicedo lasted just 14 minutes before he had to be withdrawn, cutting short any sense that his problems were behind him. Alonso later admitted the concern was not entirely fresh, saying the issue against Brighton “wasn’t something new.”

Even so, Chelsea had hoped he would make it for Arsenal. The build-up carried a hint of optimism around Cobham that he might just be ready in time for the visit of Mikel Arteta’s side, a game that always demands control and bite in midfield.

Alonso confirmed that Caicedo pushed it close. Speaking to Sky Sports before kick-off, the Chelsea manager explained why the midfielder ultimately did not make the squad.

“He was close. But there is no point in taking a risk at this moment. We need to be cautious,” Alonso said, underlining the club’s decision to protect one of their key assets rather than gamble on a marquee fixture.
