Mikel Merino Leads Arsenal with Pride in Carabao Cup
Mikel Merino walked out at Portman Road with the armband on and a grin he could barely hide. For the second time under Mikel Arteta, the midfielder had been trusted to lead Arsenal on a matchday – and he made it clear what it meant.
“It is a huge honour to represent the club in this way,” the 30-year-old said after the Carabao Cup tie against Ipswich Town, his voice carrying the weight of the badge on his sleeve as much as the goal he scored in the 58th minute.
Merino has done this before. He first wore the armband in last season’s Carabao Cup last-16 win over Brighton, a quieter step into leadership. This one felt bigger. Another away night, another cup test, and again Arteta turned to him.
“Many legends have done it before me,” he reflected. “I know it is just a Carabao Cup game, but to me it is happiness.
“I try to do the best I can to represent this club and I know how big it is to wear the armband, so I’m really happy.”
The goal helped. Arriving from midfield, Merino added his name to the scoresheet and underlined why Arteta trusts him to set the tone in a rotated side. Yet he was far more animated when the conversation moved away from himself and towards the teenager who lit up the night.

Max Dowman is only 16. He left Portman Road as Arsenal’s second youngest goalscorer in the competition, a landmark that instantly turns heads at a club built on academy folklore.
“He is honestly an unbelievable talent,” Merino said, leaning into the words. “He is so young and so alive. You can see the joy in his eyes when he plays football.”
That joy has to be shaped. Merino knows it, and so does the coaching staff. The armband comes with responsibility, and part of that is looking after the kids who suddenly find themselves under the lights.
“Obviously there are things to improve as he is very young,” Merino added. “He needs to keep listening and learning from us veterans. We are here to support him and we are going to get him to the best version of himself, for sure.”
On a cup night that could easily have drifted into the background of a long season, Arsenal found two things that matter: a captain who feels the privilege of the role, and a teenager already hinting he might be worth building around in years to come.
