Mason Greenwood Faces UEFA Investigation After Fenerbahce vs Lyon Chaos
Mason Greenwood faces a fresh investigation from UEFA after Fenerbahce’s fiery Champions League play-off win over Lyon descended into chaos at full-time.
The Turkish club confirmed that European football’s governing body has opened disciplinary proceedings against Greenwood and team-mate Matteo Guendouzi, as well as the club itself, following the second leg at the Groupama Stadium at the end of August. Fenerbahce won the tie 2-1 on the night, but the football quickly became a sideshow.
Post-match chaos under UEFA spotlight
The final whistle had barely gone when tempers snapped. Players and staff from both sides clashed, with the confrontation spilling from the pitch into the tunnel area. Amid the melee, a figure wearing what looked like a Lyon tracksuit appeared and seemed to launch a flying kick in the direction of Guendouzi.
Greenwood, who had helped Fenerbahce secure a return to the Champions League proper for the first time since 2009, was also drawn into the ugly scenes. Several Lyon supporters tried to push onto the pitch as the visitors celebrated, adding to the sense of disorder that will now be poured over by UEFA’s disciplinary bodies.
Guendouzi is alleged to have provoked sections of the home support as he left the pitch. Greenwood is understood to be under investigation for his part in the post-match confrontation.
Fenerbahce later moved to clarify the situation, confirming both players are the subject of UEFA’s case.
Fenerbahce vow to defend players
In a strongly worded statement, the club said:
“Following the UEFA Champions League Play-Off Round second-leg match, a disciplinary process has been initiated by UEFA concerning our players Matteo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood, as well as our Club.
“Our Club will present the necessary defences before the relevant UEFA committees to protect the rights and interests of both our players and Fenerbahce. All required information, documents, and defences will be submitted to UEFA, and developments are being closely monitored by our Club. We present this to the public for information.”
The message was clear: Fenerbahce intend to stand firmly behind their squad as the case moves through UEFA’s channels.
Guendouzi hits back at abuse from stands
Guendouzi later explained his reaction, saying he felt pushed to the limit by the treatment he received from the stands throughout the evening.
“You know, when you've got 60,000 people insulting your family, your mum, your children – even before the match – and nobody from the refereeing team tells the stadium to be quiet,” he said.
“Because I know that in France, when this sort of thing happens, there comes a point where they'll speak to the supporters and the match might be stopped. For 90 minutes – even longer if you count the warm-up – they were insulting my family.
“That really gets to you. If you want to banter, then it goes both ways. They insulted my mum and my family; to me, that was disrespectful.”
Head coach Ismail Kartal publicly backed his midfielder, underlining the unity inside the Fenerbahce dressing room.
“As a team we all stood together to support Guendouzi. Support was provided. That is what teamwork is all about,” he said.
Greenwood’s new chapter under scrutiny
For Greenwood, the investigation comes just as his career in Turkey had begun to gather momentum. The former Manchester United forward, who joined Fenerbahce from Marseille on a four-year deal in July, played his part in steering the club back into the Champions League main draw after a 15-year absence.
Fenerbahce now step into a demanding league-phase schedule, where they will face AS Roma, Aston Villa, Slavia Praha, Liverpool, Shakhtar Donetsk, LASK, Villarreal and Atletico Madrid.
With United also back in the competition, the storyline almost writes itself. There remains a possibility Greenwood could one day line up against his former club in Europe again – but only if both sides navigate the league phase and UEFA’s verdict on this volatile night in Lyon doesn’t alter the path ahead.
