Chelsea Eyes Wijnaldum as Enzo Fernandez Replacement
Chelsea are scrambling to plug the Enzo Fernandez gap – and Georginio Wijnaldum has emerged as a surprise solution.
The London club allowed Fernandez to join Manchester City on deadline day in a staggering £125million deal, only to see their primary replacement target slip away. A move for Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara never got off the ground, leaving Xabi Alonso short in the middle of the pitch just as his reign begins to take shape.
With the window now shut, Alonso and the Chelsea hierarchy have turned to the only market still open to them: free agents. That search has led them to a familiar Premier League face.
Wijnaldum back on the radar
According to Foot Mercato, Chelsea have made contact with Wijnaldum, who is available after leaving Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq in the summer. Now 35, the Dutch midfielder is being considered as an experienced short-term option to steady a midfield suddenly stripped of its World Cup winner.
Wijnaldum knows this league inside out. He built his reputation at Newcastle before becoming a key cog in Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool machine, winning the Premier League title in 2020 and forming part of one of the most effective midfields in recent memory.
Across his time in England, he racked up 277 appearances and regularly delivered in big moments, chipping in with crucial goals and relentless work without the ball. His stint in Saudi Arabia showed he still carries a threat: 17 goals in 34 outings for Al-Ettifaq last season, even if that form did not translate into a new contract.
For Chelsea, that blend of know-how and durability is exactly what appeals. Alonso is trying to impose his philosophy at Stamford Bridge, but he needs reliable lieutenants in the engine room to do it.
Alonso’s midfield headache
So far this season, Romeo Lavia has started both games in central midfield as Alonso stamps his identity on the side. Reece James and Cole Palmer have been used alongside him, offering technical quality and versatility, while Fernandez was left out of the team as speculation over his future intensified.
The Argentine’s departure to City has now removed a major piece from Chelsea’s core. Alonso, though, has been adamant that every decision is made with the wider project in mind.
"We will see. We want the best for team. If anything that will happen or develop, we are not sure. We are preparing for all the scenarios, but I know that from Wednesday, we have a team to challenge and I want to win."
He may need every ounce of that conviction. Moises Caicedo, signed for £115m and expected to be a cornerstone of this new Chelsea, limped off on Sunday, adding another layer of anxiety to an already thin area.
A midfield that once boasted Fernandez and Caicedo as long-term pillars could now be held together, at least temporarily, by a 35-year-old free agent.
If Chelsea do push ahead and bring Wijnaldum back to the Premier League, the move will carry a clear message: Alonso is not waiting for the next window to make his team competitive.
