Barcelona’s chase for Julian Alvarez isn’t dead. It might just be waiting for January.
Reports in Spain suggest the Atletico Madrid striker’s camp now believes the door could swing open from the other side: instead of Barça knocking again, Atletico themselves might eventually come calling with an offer.
The claim, aired on El Chiringuito TV, centres on a simple idea: the situation at Atletico could deteriorate over the season to the point where the club is forced to rethink its hardline stance on the Argentina international. If that happens, the transfer dynamics change completely.
A summer target that never really went away
Alvarez was Barcelona’s first-choice option to fill the No.9 role. He topped their list, he fit the profile, and the Catalan club pushed to prise him away from the Metropolitano. They failed.
Barça then pivoted to Gabriel Jesus, sealing a deal that was meant to close the gap in attack. It solved one problem, but not the obsession. Inside the club, the idea that they could return for Alvarez in January has never fully disappeared.
Financially, the numbers don’t rule it out. Barcelona are understood to have around €60 million of Financial Fair Play margin available, enough to at least explore another major move if the opportunity arises.
Atletico’s iron stance – for now
All summer, Atletico’s message was blunt: Alvarez is not leaving. The club treated the matter as closed long before the window shut, confident that the player would stay and the noise from Barcelona would eventually die down.
It hasn’t. The speculation still hangs over the forward, a shadow trailing him into the new campaign.
Gabriel Jesus’ arrival at Barça didn’t silence it either. Barcelona may have secured a new striker, but the Alvarez file never left the drawer. Atletico know this. Inside the Metropolitano, there is an acceptance that the topic could hover over the season, whether Alvarez ends up staying or not.
Why January could look very different
Barcelona’s interest is easy to explain. Alvarez was, and remains, their preferred choice to lead the line. Missing out in the summer didn’t change the evaluation, only the timing.
What could truly alter the picture is Atletico’s internal outlook. If the belief from Alvarez’s camp proves accurate and the situation in Madrid becomes untenable, Barcelona would walk into a completely different negotiation.
Instead of trying to prise away a player Atletico had no intention of selling, Barça could find themselves in the rare position of being courted by the selling club. That flips the leverage, the tone, and potentially the price.
There is also the expectation that new intermediaries, with links to both Barcelona and Atletico, could enter the scene if the saga escalates. Their role would be to manage a delicate operation between two rivals who rarely do business lightly.
For now, it is still a scenario, not a signed-off strategy. But if tension grows around Alvarez at the Metropolitano, the January window could offer Barcelona exactly what they missed in the summer: a real opening.
