Marshall Triumphs Over VCU with 3-1 Comeback Victory
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall took a punch, steadied itself, and then tore VCU apart.
Down 1-0 inside seven minutes, the No. 15 Thundering Herd rattled off three unanswered goals to claim a 3-1 win over the Rams on Sunday night at Hoops Family Field, stretching their unbeaten start to 2-0-2.
Early mistake, early punishment
The night started in the worst possible way for the hosts. A defensive miscue left Ty Johnson clean through on goal, and the VCU forward showed no hesitation, lifting the ball over goalkeeper Yurij Obert and tapping in to silence the home crowd and give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Marshall looked rattled. Head coach Chris Grassie has spoken openly about the process of integrating a wave of new players, and the opening spell showed exactly why that process can be painful. Misplaced passes, hesitant movement, gaps in understanding.
But the Herd didn’t stay on the ropes for long.
Apolinario ignites the comeback
Eight minutes after the opener, Marshall found its spark. Goncalo Machado slipped the ball to Thiago Apolinario with little on for the Brazilian, at least on first glance. Apolinario took one look, trusted his strike, and unleashed a drive from nearly 40 yards.
The ball flew, Manuel Monteiro was caught off guard, and the net bulged. 1-1. Apolinario’s third goal of the season, and a jolt of electricity through the stadium.
VCU responded well and carried a real threat through the rest of the first half. The Rams found spaces, asked questions, and forced Marshall to defend deeper than Grassie would have liked. When they broke through, Obert answered. His best moment before the interval came in the 31st minute, when he stood tall to preserve the deadlock and send the sides into halftime level.
Roberto swings the game
Marshall came out of the break with a different edge. Sharper, quicker, more connected.
That shift paid off just over four minutes into the second half. At the 49:26 mark, a deflection fell kindly to Joao Roberto just outside the 18-yard box. He didn’t wait for a second invitation. Roberto stepped in and drove his shot past Monteiro, turning the match on its head and pushing Marshall in front, 2-1.
From there, the Herd leaned on their keeper and their growing confidence.
Obert produced two more big stops, first in the 59th minute, then again in the 85th, each time denying VCU a way back into the contest. With every save, the one-goal lead felt heavier for the Rams and lighter for the Herd.
Romberg slams the door
As the clock ticked into the 90th minute, VCU chased an equalizer and finally blinked. A mistake at the back left Carl Romberg alone through on goal. He kept his composure and finished to seal it, 3-1 to Marshall, the final act on a night that had started with anxiety and ended in control.
Marshall stays home next, hosting Utah Valley on Friday at 7:15 p.m., with the sense that this still-gelling group is only beginning to show what it can become.
