Manchester United Target Felix Nmecha as Casemiro Successor

Manchester United’s search for a new heartbeat in midfield has taken them back to familiar territory – and straight into a battle with their neighbours.

Felix Nmecha, once a Manchester City prospect and now a standout for Germany at the World Cup, has emerged as a serious name on United’s recruitment list as they plan for life after Casemiro.

World Cup stage, global spotlight

Nmecha has not wasted his moment on the biggest stage. The 25-year-old opened the scoring in Germany’s 7-1 demolition of Curacao, crashing a first-time right-footed strike into the top corner from 20 yards. One touch, one swing, no hesitation.

The goal turned heads, but it’s his all-round game that is fuelling interest. Operating box-to-box, he has shown the legs to surge forward and the discipline to shut down counterattacks, the kind of dual threat United have lacked as Casemiro’s influence has waned.

Clubs in the USA have already taken notice during the tournament, yet United’s interest is nothing new. The midfielder was first linked with a move to Old Trafford back in February. Now, with his World Cup profile rising, those early whispers are starting to sound a lot louder.

From blue to yellow – and possibly red?

Nmecha’s story has already taken him across some of Europe’s most demanding environments. He came through City’s academy, only to leave in 2021 for Wolfsburg after an eye-catching loan spell at Anderlecht. From there, his development earned him a move to Borussia Dortmund, where his game has grown in both maturity and responsibility.

Reports in Germany now suggest a return to Manchester is on the table – but this time in United red. The club view him as a potential long-term replacement for Casemiro, a midfielder who can bring energy, physical presence and control to the centre of the pitch.

United are not alone. Sky Sports Deutschland reports that City are also interested in bringing their former player back to the Etihad, adding an extra edge to the chase. Real Madrid are also said to be in the frame, with returning manager Jose Mourinho understood to admire Nmecha’s profile.

This is not a quiet market. It is a race.

Dortmund hold the cards

Any club hoping to prise Nmecha away from Signal Iduna Park will have to pay. And wait.

Dortmund are relaxed about his future. The Bundesliga side have him under contract until 2030, a position of strength that allows them to dictate the timing of any exit. A release clause, set at £61m, does not even become active until the summer of 2027.

That clause effectively draws a line in the sand: Dortmund expect any move to happen in that window, not now.

Nmecha’s camp is striking the same note. His agent, Tobi Alabi, made the position clear in an interview with Bild.

“Felix still has two years left on his contract, and we fully respect that. Borussia Dortmund have played an important role in his development.

“He is grateful for the trust and the platform the club have given him. The player is developing from season to season, and when a player performs well, there is naturally always interest and questions about his future.

“That’s part of top-level football and reflects the progress he has made. Right now, the focus is very clear: Felix is determined to give everything for Borussia Dortmund, to fight for the club and to help the team achieve its goals.”

The message is firm: admiration is welcome, but movement is unlikely in the short term.

United’s midfield rebuild

United, for their part, are not standing still while they monitor Nmecha. The club is close to sealing a £39m deal for Brazil and Atalanta midfielder Ederson, who is expected to undergo a medical while on World Cup duty.

Ederson’s arrival would mark the first major piece in a reshaped midfield, but the interest in Nmecha shows United are thinking beyond a quick fix. They want legs, range, and longevity in the centre of the pitch.

Whether they can turn admiration into a concrete bid – and whether Dortmund will even listen before that 2027 clause kicks in – is another matter.

For now, Nmecha runs Germany’s midfield at a World Cup, with three European giants circling and two clubs in Manchester wondering if a former City youngster could soon be the man to anchor United’s next era.
