Michael Carrick on Transfer Talks: Rashford and Zirkzee

Michael Carrick is just about the last man you’d expect to open up on transfer business. He rarely bites on speculation, barely nudges on rumour. But the questions are coming his way regardless.

Manchester United’s head coach will face the usual barrage before the weekend, and two names are set to dominate: Joshua Zirkzee and Marcus Rashford.

Rashford first. Noise around him has flared again, this time from Turkey, with Fenerbahce linked. Yet the stance inside United has barely shifted in weeks. Across all parties, the consistent line for the past month has been simple: Rashford stays at Old Trafford this season. That remains the situation.

His performance at Hull City only strengthened that position. Introduced at half-time in last week’s defeat, he was one of United’s brighter players, offering more threat and purpose than most. On that evidence, there is a genuine chance he is promoted to the starting XI when Ipswich visit Old Trafford on Sunday.

Joshua Zirkzee

Zirkzee’s situation feels very different.

The Dutch forward, who has drawn admiring glances from several Serie A clubs over the summer, is now the subject of concrete interest from Fiorentina. The Italian side are exploring a loan deal, testing the waters to see if United will bend.

United, though, have a clear preference. They would rather sell outright, or at the very least agree to a loan that includes an obligation to buy. A simple temporary move does not fit their ideal scenario, especially with other Italian clubs still hovering in the background and considering their own moves.

So Carrick walks into his news conference with a familiar backdrop: transfer talk swirling, speculation building, and his own instinct to keep cards pressed tightly to his chest.

The questions will come. The answers, as ever with him, might not.
