Manchester United Confirm Summer Departures of Sancho and Casemiro
Manchester United have drawn a firm line under another turbulent season, confirming a clutch of senior and academy players will leave Old Trafford as free agents this summer – with Jadon Sancho and Casemiro the headline departures.
The club announced on Wednesday morning that Sancho, Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia, Sonny Aljofree, James Bailey and Malachi Sharpe will all move on when their contracts expire.
No fanfare. Just a clear signal that United are cutting deep as they reshape the squad.
Casemiro’s Departure
Casemiro’s spell in Manchester ends with a decorated but demanding four-year stint. The Brazilian midfielder, signed to bring steel and authority to the centre of the pitch, made 160 appearances and scored 26 goals, numbers that underline how often he dragged United into the fight rather than simply patrolling in front of the back four.
He leaves with two major honours. His towering header and commanding display against Newcastle United in the 2023 Carabao Cup final helped deliver the club’s first trophy of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, a night when his big-game pedigree shone through at Wembley. He added the Emirates FA Cup in 2024, another medal on a CV already crammed with silverware.
Malacia’s Struggles
If Casemiro’s time will be remembered for decisive moments on the biggest stages, Malacia’s story at Old Trafford carries a different tone.
The Dutch full-back arrived in 2022 with energy and aggression, quickly winning admirers for his tenacity on the left flank. He made 50 first-team appearances, a solid return that hinted at a long-term role. But a cruel run of injuries repeatedly stalled his progress, limiting him to just three outings this season. He was, however, part of the matchday squad when United lifted the Carabao Cup in 2023, a small but significant marker in a career still young enough to be rebuilt elsewhere.
Sancho's Exit
Sancho’s name on the list underlines how sharply United are willing to pivot. Once a marquee arrival and a symbol of a new attacking era, he now departs as the club strips back and recalibrates.
Academy Departures
Behind the headline acts, the exits of Sonny Aljofree, James Bailey and Malachi Sharpe represent another sweep through the academy ranks. These are the quieter goodbyes, but they matter inside Carrington: spaces freed up, pathways cleared, careers nudged towards new chapters away from Old Trafford.
The announcement lands early in the window, and deliberately so. United have set out their stall. Contracts will not be extended for sentiment’s sake, reputations will not protect underperforming or unlucky players, and the rebuild will be shaped by hard decisions rather than nostalgia.
The names are now public. The next question is simple and far more demanding: who comes in to justify such a ruthless reset?
