Manchester United Pursues Rising Star Felix Nmecha

Manchester United’s midfield rebuild is gathering pace, and the net is being cast wide. With Ederson already through the door and Casemiro gone, Michael Carrick has made it clear: the spine of this United side is getting ripped out and built again, piece by piece.

The club’s hierarchy are backing him to do it. A third-place finish last season has given Old Trafford a rare commodity in recent years – optimism – and with it, a sizeable transfer budget. The message from the board is blunt enough: if United want to chase down Arsenal and Manchester City, they will have to pay to close the gap.

Carrick wants power and personality in the middle of the pitch. That means more than one new midfielder. It also means casting an eye beyond the obvious names.

Nmecha moves up the list

Mateus Fernandes has taken up plenty of column inches as a possible arrival this summer, but another name is working its way up United’s internal lists: Felix Nmecha of Borussia Dortmund and Germany.

He is not the headline act of this window. Not yet. A recent contract extension at Dortmund makes any immediate move complicated, and a transfer this summer is regarded as highly unlikely. Still, inside Old Trafford, his name is underlined rather than crossed out – a player to track, a situation to revisit.

Sky Sports Germany reporter Patrick Berger has outlined just how active United already are behind the scenes. Posting on X, he revealed that United are “stepping up their pursuit” of Nmecha, with Director of Recruitment Christopher Vivell in “close contact” with the player’s camp. That alone says plenty about how seriously the club view him.

They are not alone. Berger reports that Manchester City, Liverpool and Real Madrid are all watching developments, with a move to the Premier League considered a realistic path for Nmecha later in his career. For now, though, Dortmund holds his focus – and so does the World Cup with Germany.

With the new season, Nmecha is due to move into the salary bracket previously occupied by Niklas Süle, a clear signal from Dortmund of his growing stature at the club.

World Cup shop window

This summer has pushed Nmecha into a different kind of spotlight. His performances with Germany at the World Cup have sharpened interest and lifted his profile beyond the Bundesliga.

Inside Germany, his stock has been climbing for some time. His influence on the national side at this tournament has only accelerated that rise and forced more eyes onto his game. The Overlap went as far as to call him “the most underrated midfielder in Europe” – a line that tends to stick once the wider football world starts paying attention.

There is also a family thread to this story. Nmecha has long been reported to harbour a strong interest in playing in the Premier League, where his brother Lukas currently turns out for Leeds United. That ambition, coupled with the growing queue of English suitors, gives this transfer saga a sense of inevitability, even if the timing is far from settled.

Dortmund dig in – for now

Dortmund, predictably, have moved to protect their asset. Nmecha signed a new contract this summer, a deal that both rewards his progress and strengthens the club’s hand in any future negotiations.

Head coach Niko Kovač left no doubt about how he views the midfielder when the ink dried on that agreement. “Felix is a key player in this team,” he said, stressing that the 25-year-old is at “a good age” and “slowly reaching his peak.” Kovač believes Nmecha can become even more dangerous in front of goal and points to him as proof that “hard work pays off for both the individual and the team.”

Those are not the words of a coach preparing to lose a cornerstone of his side. They are the words of a club bracing to build around him – or to demand a premium when the big bids finally land.

For United, that is the challenge. The World Cup is turning a once-underrated midfielder into one of the most closely watched in Europe. The longer Nmecha shines for Germany and grows at Dortmund, the more intense the scramble will become.

United have made their move early, keeping the lines open, keeping their interest clear. The question now is simple: when the time comes to prise Felix Nmecha out of Dortmund, will Old Trafford be ready to win a fight against Europe’s elite, or watch another long-term target slip into someone else’s midfield?
