That loss came with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia as the only regular starting outfield player in the XI, but the scoreline still lingers. Champions are not used to being brushed aside, whatever the context.
They will not be at full capacity here either. Bradley Barcola, Desire Doué and Ousmane Dembélé are all missing, taking some of the explosive edge off their attack. Yet look at what remains: Kvaratskhelia’s sharp angles and drifting menace, Nuno Mendes driving from deep, Vitinha’s neat patterns in midfield, João Neves snapping and passing in the heart of it all.
This is still a side built to expose any looseness in United’s shape. Any rust in Tielemans’ legs. Any hesitation from a back line adjusting to the movement and rotations of an elite European attack.
A preseason game that feels like more
On paper, this is United’s fourth friendly of the summer. In practice, it feels like the first real measuring stick.
Carrick gets his captain back. He gets his new midfielder on the pitch. He faces a wounded but proud European champion, stung by a 3-0 defeat and eager to reassert its standards. He does it without his top two goalkeepers, leaning on a veteran and giving a teenager a front-row seat to what this level demands.
