Barcelona, according to the same report, never had any intention of letting Bernal go this summer. The numbers underline just how unrealistic a deal always was. Bernal’s contract includes a €500m (£427.5m) release clause. On paper, that makes any departure virtually impossible unless Barcelona themselves choose to soften their position. They haven’t. They won’t.
