Manchester United's Left-Back Search Intensifies with Chelsea Options
Manchester United’s summer rebuild has been bold, expensive and, for the most part, decisive. Around £150 million has already gone into reshaping the heart of Michael Carrick’s midfield, with Andrey Santos brought in from Chelsea, Youri Tielemans arriving from Aston Villa and Carlos Baleba signed from Brighton.
Yet with the window ticking towards its close, one problem position still hangs over Old Trafford.
Left-back hunt enters emergency mode
United’s recruitment team has been scouring the market for a new left-back all summer. The search has dragged on, options have slipped away, and the tone has shifted from long-term planning to short-term problem-solving.
Luke Shaw is into the final year of his contract. Patrick Dorgu, despite his versatility, is viewed by Carrick more as a winger than a natural full-back. That leaves United exposed on the flank, and the club knows it.
The pressure has finally forced a change of approach. According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, United are now seriously weighing up a loan move for a left-back before the deadline, echoing the stopgap deal that brought Sergio Reguilon in from Tottenham in 2023.
Romano suggested United are likely to move for a solid, experienced option rather than chase a marquee name.
He referenced Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde as an example of the calibre they admire but cannot realistically afford in this window, describing the deal as “too expensive”. The expectation instead is for a Reguilon-style profile: a seasoned left-back, international pedigree, capable of stepping straight into the squad and pushing for minutes without demanding star status.
It would not be the glamorous solution some supporters imagined at the start of the summer. It might be the only realistic one now.
Chelsea pair on United radar
The defensive reshuffle at United is not limited to the left flank. Centre-back has suddenly become a concern again, and Chelsea could hold two of the keys to United’s late-window plans.
talkSPORT report that United have been offered the chance to sign Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo, with the club also monitoring highly rated youngster Josh Acheampong.
Tosin, 28, appears to be edging towards the exit at Stamford Bridge. He was left out of Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Fulham, and his No. 4 shirt has already gone to new signing Valentin Barco – a clear signal of where he stands in the pecking order.
United’s interest is straightforward: they need cover, and quickly. Injuries to Leny Yoro, Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt have stripped depth from the heart of Carrick’s defence, leaving Harry Maguire as one of the few fit senior centre-backs. The club want another option to sit alongside that core group and stabilise a position that looked well stocked only a few weeks ago.
Tosin is thought to be available for around £20 million. For a Premier League-proven defender in his peak years, it represents the kind of opportunity United have to consider in the final days of the window.
His background underlines why. A product of Manchester City’s academy, Tosin spent 17 years with the club after joining in 2003. He broke into the first team in 2016 but managed only eight senior appearances before moving to Fulham in 2020. At Craven Cottage he finally established himself, putting together consistent seasons in the top flight and showing he can handle the physical and tactical demands of the league.
Acheampong, by contrast, is one for the future. United are understood to admire the teenager, but Chelsea regard him as “untouchable” and are not prepared to sell. Any move there looks dead before it starts.
So United’s late scramble narrows to two fronts: a short-term fix at left-back and a value move at centre-back. They have spent big on the midfield. Now, with the deadline looming and injuries biting, the question is whether they can find the defensive “solutions” they need in time – or whether this window will leave Carrick one piece short of a complete squad.
