Álvarez Rejects Manchester City Return Amidst Atletico Standoff
Julián Álvarez has turned his back on a dramatic return to Etihad Stadium, shutting down Manchester City’s approach before the Premier League champions could even put an official offer on the table, according to Cadena SER.
City contacted Atletico Madrid to explore the possibility of re-signing their former striker, only to be met with a categorical refusal from the 26-year-old. No talks, no negotiations, no second thoughts. Álvarez simply does not want to go back to Manchester.
That hard line comes in the middle of a tense standoff with Atletico, a saga that has quickly become the defining transfer story of the summer. Arsenal have made him their priority, the dream No.9 for Mikel Arteta, but the answer in north London has been the same as in Manchester: no. Multiple approaches, repeatedly rejected.
Álvarez’s mind is fixed on one destination: Barcelona. The Catalan club already tested Atletico’s resolve earlier in the window with a €100million (£86m) bid, which was knocked back. Barcelona president Joan Laporta then went public this week, openly acknowledging their pursuit and calling it “common knowledge” that the Argentine wants to wear the Blaugrana shirt.
Atletico’s response has been just as blunt as the player’s. The Madrid club have stressed they will not sell to a direct Liga rival, drawing a clear red line and reiterating in recent days that there is a “zero per cent chance” of doing business with Barca for their star forward.
This is not about tactics or game time for Álvarez. His refusal to return to England is understood to stem from personal and family considerations. Specific UK visa rules would make it difficult for his relatives to visit him regularly, a problem he does not face in Spain. For a player who thrived in Manchester, that marks a striking shift in priorities.
Álvarez joined City from River Plate in January 2022 for £14m and quickly became a key part of Pep Guardiola’s squad. He scored 36 goals in 103 appearances and helped drive the club to a historic Treble before Atletico paid £82m to take him to Madrid two summers ago. On the pitch, his first spell in England was a success story. Off it, the landscape has clearly changed.
Cadena SER report that Álvarez has been reminded, firmly and repeatedly, that Arsenal now represent his only realistic escape route from Atletico. Yet he remains unmoved, determined to stay in Spain and wait for Barcelona. That stance leaves him boxed in: a club refusing to strengthen a rival, and a player refusing to cross the Channel again.
