Roberto De Zerbi's Selection Dilemmas Ahead of Tottenham vs Newcastle
Roberto De Zerbi walks into his first Premier League home game as Tottenham head coach with something managers secretly love: real selection headaches.
Newcastle arrive on Saturday to face a Spurs side that has just remembered how to win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and two new signings are already jostling for a place in the spotlight.
New faces, new dilemmas
Savio and Omar Marmoush have barely had time to unpack, yet both are already in the frame to start. Savio is pushing hard to be thrown straight into the XI, while Marmoush is available after completing an initial loan move from Manchester City.
Both forwards arrive match-sharp. They featured heavily in City's pre-season schedule, so De Zerbi does not need to nurse them through minutes. If he wants to reshape his attack immediately, he has the tools to do it.
Tottenham’s 5-1 demolition of Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday has injected some badly needed confidence. That was their first victory of the season at home, and De Zerbi will demand that the intensity and fluency from that night carry straight into the league.
Defence under the microscope
At the back, the picture is shifting. Pedro Porro, a World Cup winner, is pushing hard to start after getting a valuable half-hour on Wednesday. His attacking thrust from right-back fits De Zerbi’s aggressive blueprint.
Micky van de Ven also collected 30 minutes in midweek, but his summer workload has been lighter than most. With that in mind, the Dutch centre-back may have to settle for another place on the bench as his fitness is built up more cautiously.
On the left, Destiny Udogie impressed against Charlton and reminded everyone why he is so highly rated. That performance, though, might actually see him managed carefully here, with Andy Robertson in line to get the nod from the start to avoid overloading Udogie so early in the campaign.
Midfield shake-up on the cards
The engine room could see a notable change in balance. De Zerbi may be tempted to unleash Sandro Tonali and Rodrigo Bentancur together from the first whistle, a pairing that would give Spurs bite, control and passing range in equal measure.
Just ahead of them, Mateus Fernandes is a strong candidate to occupy the more advanced role. Conor Gallagher and Lucas Bergvall have not convinced in recent outings, opening the door for Fernandes to keep his place and knit midfield to attack.
If De Zerbi wants more control against Newcastle’s press, that Tonali–Bentancur base with Fernandes in front looks tailor-made for it.
Big calls in attack
The real intrigue lies up front. Does De Zerbi trust Savio and Marmoush from the start, or does he ease them into the Premier League rhythm from the bench?
Dominic Solanke has made his own argument. He scored on Wednesday night and offered the kind of focal point and penalty-box presence Spurs have lacked when Richarlison has struggled, particularly in the defeat at Brentford. On form, Solanke has every reason to expect to keep his place.
Mohammed Kudus, now back in full training, adds another layer to the puzzle. He may have to be content with a place among the substitutes this time, but his return gives De Zerbi yet another high-impact option if the game tightens in the second half.
De Zerbi wanted competition everywhere. He has it now. Newcastle will reveal quickly whether this new-look Tottenham can turn those choices into a statement performance or whether the juggling act has only just begun.
