Manchester United Targets Jorge Salinas as Barcelona's Plans Stumble
Manchester United have barged into Barcelona’s carefully laid summer plans, launching a serious move for Jorge Salinas and threatening to hijack the Catalan club’s priority signing at left-back.
The 19-year-old Racing Santander defender has been sitting at the top of Barcelona’s list for weeks. Now United have arrived with money on the table and a clear path to the first team. The race has changed overnight.
United move as Hall deal stalls
United’s interest is no passing whim. According to reports in Spain, the Premier League club have identified Salinas as their Plan B after talks for Newcastle’s Lewis Hall ground to a halt. Newcastle, convinced United are a direct rival for European spots, have dug in and refused to sell.
So United have pivoted. Quickly.
Their scouts watched Salinas closely at last July’s European Under-19 Championship in Wales, where Spain won the title with an assured, modern brand of football. Salinas impressed there: dynamic, aggressive, technically sharp. Enough for United’s hierarchy to conclude he can skip the usual bedding-in phase and go straight into the senior squad.
The idea is simple: throw him into competition with Luke Shaw, whose recurring injuries have slowly chipped away at his reliability and rhythm. Several English outlets report that Michael Carrick has already given the green light to sign Salinas if the Hall deal cannot be revived.
Barcelona’s plan under threat
Barcelona, for their part, have never really taken their eyes off Salinas. Sporting director Deco has spent most of the window trying to rebuild an attack stripped of Robert Lewandowski and Marcus Rashford, with Ferran Torres also edging towards a possible move to Paris Saint-Germain. Even so, left-back has remained one of the glaring weak spots in the squad.
The Joao Cancelo operation is close to being wrapped up, but that only partially covers the problem. Cancelo can play on either flank; Barcelona still want a natural, long-term option on the left. That man, in their minds, is Salinas.
Talks with Racing Santander, though, have stalled badly in recent weeks. As the negotiations slowed, the door opened. United walked straight through it.
The money gap that changes everything
Here is where the two giants split.
United are ready to go straight for the release clause: 16 million euros, paid in full, no instalments, no haggling. For Racing, it is the cleanest, quickest solution. Once the clause is triggered, they are out of the equation.
Barcelona cannot play that game. Choked by their financial constraints, they have put together a far more modest proposal: 8 million euros in total, with 6 million fixed and 2 million in performance-related bonuses. On top of that, they are trying to sweeten the deal by offering a selection of young players on loan to Racing Santander to ease the immediate financial hit and offer sporting value in return.
It is creative. It is also miles away from what United are proposing.
Heart in Barcelona, clause in Manchester
Yet this is not a straight auction.
Barcelona still hold one powerful card: the player’s will. Salinas, by all accounts, dreams of pulling on the blaugrana shirt and playing at Camp Nou. If the choice were purely emotional, he would choose Barcelona over any other destination, including Old Trafford.
That dream, though, may not be enough to bend the market.
If United decide to formally activate the 16 million euro release clause, Racing Santander will be legally obliged to accept. The decision then falls squarely on Salinas: follow his heart to a club that cannot match the financial muscle on the table, or step into the Premier League with a huge contract and the promise of immediate competition for a starting place.
Barcelona’s project, United’s money, a teenager’s career at a crossroads. The next move belongs to Manchester — and to a 19-year-old from Cantabria who suddenly has Europe at his feet.
