Manchester United Set for Windfall as Fenerbahce Targets Mason Greenwood
Manchester United will watch the next few weeks with unusual interest, and not because of anything happening at Old Trafford. The focus is hundreds of miles away, on Mason Greenwood and a transfer saga that could hand the club a sizeable financial boost.
The academy graduate, who left United for Marseille in 2024, has rebuilt his career in France with the kind of numbers that always attract suitors. Sixteen goals and seven assists in 32 Ligue 1 appearances last season underlined his value and re-established him as a serious attacking force in one of Europe’s top leagues.
That form has put him firmly on the summer market. Marseille’s failure to qualify for the Champions League has only sharpened the sense that Greenwood will not be staying at the Stade Vélodrome for long. Roma, Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus have all been linked, with clubs across the continent alerted to his productivity and age profile.
But the most concrete noise right now is coming from Turkey.
Fenerbahce step forward
Fenerbahce presidential candidate Hakan Safi has gone public, claiming the club have already struck an agreement with Greenwood over a move to Istanbul.
“We have signed a four-year agreement with Mason Greenwood,” Safi announced, describing the 24-year-old as a player who has already proved himself at the highest level of European football.
“He has agreed to join Fenerbahçe during the most valuable and productive years of his career. I said I would bring a star player. Today, I am experiencing the justified pride of keeping my promise.”
It is a bold declaration and a clear statement of intent. For Fenerbahce, securing Greenwood would be a marquee addition in his prime. For Marseille, it would represent a swift turnaround on an asset they picked up from United for £26 million.
For United, it could be a lucrative clause coming to life.
United’s 40 per cent interest
When United sanctioned Greenwood’s departure to Marseille, they did so with a substantial 40 per cent sell-on clause written into the deal. At the time, it looked like a hedge against the possibility that he might flourish elsewhere. Now, with a major move looming, that decision is on the verge of paying off.
Reports in France suggest Marseille want around £47.5 million for Greenwood. If a buying club meets that valuation and United’s 40 per cent cut applies to the full fee, the Premier League side would bank in the region of £19 million without lifting a finger in the transfer market.
In a summer where every top club is juggling spending power with financial regulations, that kind of injection matters. It could influence United’s own recruitment plans, or at the very least ease pressure elsewhere in the squad-building budget.
Marseille hold the cards – for now
One important piece remains unresolved. Safi’s claim relates to personal terms, not a completed transfer. Fenerbahce still need to strike a deal with Marseille, who know they are holding a valuable asset in a seller’s market.
Marseille sporting director Gregory Lorenzi, speaking to L’Equipe, made it clear the club are weighing up all possibilities.
“He [Greenwood] is one of the players that we are really thinking about [with regard to] their future. If an opportunity presents itself, naturally, we will think about it,” Lorenzi said.
“But there is the club's position [and] that of the player. It is also up to us to manage internally to find the best possible solution for all parties.”
Those words underline the reality: Marseille will not be rushed. They have a player in demand, a contract to leverage and, potentially, an auction to encourage if interest from Italy, Spain and Germany hardens into formal offers.
For Greenwood, the decision is looming. For Marseille, it is a question of maximising value. And for Manchester United, it is a rare situation where a transfer they are not directly involved in could still shape their summer.
