Manchester United’s Champions League return turned into a procession long before the final whistle, and it may have offered a few clues about what comes next in the Premier League.

A ruthless 4-0 win over Sabah at Old Trafford on Thursday night saw both Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo named in the starting XI, with Tielemans making a sharp impact. The midfielder slipped a precise ball into Bruno Fernandes shortly before half-time, the captain sweeping home United’s second to tighten their grip on the game.

The pressure kept building. Before Sabah could reset, Benjamin Sesko added a third before the interval, killing off the contest and leaving United in complete control at the break.

That dominance allowed Michael Carrick to start thinking ahead.

Tielemans did not emerge for the second half, replaced by Mason Mount, while Andrey Santos also came on as Carrick rotated his midfield with the points already secure. Speaking to TNT Sports after what was described as a statement victory on their Champions League return, the United head coach made it clear the changes were planned rather than forced.

“It's nice as well to be able to get Andrey [Santos] and Mason [Mount] on for the second half,” Carrick said, underlining the importance of spreading minutes around a squad that faces a brutal schedule.

The substitutions, and those who stayed on the bench, sharpened the focus on Sunday’s Manchester derby. Marcus Rashford, Diogo Dalot and Harry Maguire were all unused substitutes, a detail that will not have gone unnoticed with City looming.

Rested or rotated, those decisions looked like the early sketch of Carrick’s derby blueprint.

One key concern remains. Luke Shaw was absent from the matchday squad altogether, having taken a knock in the 2-2 draw at Everton last weekend. His status for the derby is uncertain.

“It's a little bit of that [managing him],” Carrick told TNT Sports before kick-off. “He came off the other day [at Everton] with a little bit of cramp. We didn't want to take any risks really.”

United left the pitch on Thursday night with four goals, a clean sheet and their Champions League campaign firmly on track. The bigger question now hangs over Sunday: can this carefully managed squad carry that authority into the white heat of a derby?
