Brown Bears Dominate but Settle for Draw Against Rhode Island
KINGSTON, R.I. – Brown did almost everything but win.
The Bears peppered the University of Rhode Island on Thursday night, dominated nearly every column on the stat sheet, and led for more than 50 minutes. They still walked out of the URI Soccer Complex with only a 1-1 draw to show for it.
Vargas Strikes Early
The pressure came fast.
Brown jumped on the front foot from the opening whistle, pinning the Rams deep and forcing them to defend in numbers. The breakthrough arrived in the 12th minute, and it was as clean as the Bears could script it.
On the right flank, junior defender Kyra Treanor beat her marker and drove toward the end line. She whipped a ball into the six-yard box, where senior forward Angelina Vargas had found space. Vargas met it and buried her finish, driving the shot into the back of the net for her third goal of the season and the sixth of her career.
The goal rewarded a blistering start. It also set the tone: Brown looked sharper, quicker, and far more dangerous.
The chances kept coming. Vargas forced another save in the 14th minute. Senior forward Joy Okonye tested the keeper in the 25th. Senior Corine Gregory followed a minute later, and sophomore Jael‑Marie Guy added another effort on frame in the 33rd.
By halftime, the numbers told the story of one-way traffic. Brown led 11-1 in shots, 7-1 in shots on goal, and 5-2 in corner kicks. Vargas had already racked up four shots and three on target. Okonye had three attempts, two of them forcing work from the keeper.
Only the scoreline, 1-0, felt too modest.
Rams Hit Back
Rhode Island had spent most of the night chasing, but the game never fully slipped away. Brown’s back line of Treanor, senior Claire Silverman, junior Chesney Robinson, and junior Brooke Birtwistle stayed organized and logged every one of the 90 minutes, snuffing out the few early threats that emerged.
Sophomore goalkeeper Addison Etter saw little action in that stretch, needing just one save on the night, but the slim margin left the door open.
The Rams finally stepped through it in the 68th minute.
A rare spell of sustained pressure from the hosts ended with the ball at the feet of Megan Steinbach inside the penalty area. She found enough room to fire and leveled the match at 1-1, punishing Brown for not turning control into a second goal.
Suddenly, a game that had felt comfortable tightened.
Rhode Island nearly flipped it completely in the 83rd minute, when a shot crashed off the crossbar, a stark reminder that dominance in possession doesn’t guarantee safety on the scoreboard.
Late Push, No Winner
Stung by the equalizer and the close call off the bar, Brown surged again.
The Bears threw numbers forward in the closing minutes, hunting the winner their performance seemed to deserve. They earned corner kicks in the 87th and 88th minutes, swarming the box and testing Rhode Island’s resolve.
The final chance fell to Guy in the 90th minute. Her driven shot stayed on target, forcing one last save and sealing the draw.
When the whistle went, the stat line was lopsided: Brown led 17-3 in shots, 10-2 in shots on goal, and 10-4 in corner kicks. Okonye finished with game highs in shots (six) and shots on goal (four). Vargas and Guy each added four shots, with Vargas putting three on frame and Guy two.
The Bears, now 4-2-1, remain unbeaten in the state of Rhode Island this season at 4-0-1, including a perfect 4-0-0 at home. The result also stretches their overall unbeaten run to three matches (2-0-1).
The Rams move to 2-3-3, grateful for a point on a night when Brown dictated almost everything except the final score.
Next up, Brown heads to Hofstra on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1:00 p.m. in its final non-league road test of the season. With performances like this, the question isn’t whether the chances will come.
It’s how long opponents can keep surviving them.
