Maine Black Bears Hold Providence Friars to 1-1 Draw
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Under the lights at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium, Maine refused to blink.
The Black Bears, facing an unbeaten Providence side, dug in for a 1-1 draw on Thursday night that felt like a small breakthrough for a program still measuring itself against Big East opposition.
Meadows strikes before the break
For most of the first half, Maine chased shadows and counterattacking chances. Then, with the clock bleeding out, the game flipped.
Victoria Dungey, in her 60th career appearance, spun through two Friars at midfield and split the defense with a perfectly weighted ball up the gut. Isabella Meadows didn’t hesitate. She burst into the open lane, carried the pass into the box and slid her finish inside the right post with just 37 seconds left in the half.
One turn, one run, one touch. Maine walked to the locker room with a 1-0 lead and something more valuable: belief.
Providence finally breaks through
Providence pushed harder after the restart. The Friars pressed higher, asked questions from wide areas and began to turn possession into danger.
The pressure finally told in the closing stages.
With under 10 minutes remaining, the hosts thought they had their equalizer, only to see the flag go up. Brief relief for Maine. Brief, and then gone. After review, the offside call was overturned and the goal stood, dragging the score back to 1-1 and tilting the momentum.
Maine had to scrap through the final minutes to protect what had suddenly become a precious point.
Numbers, milestones and a rare Big East result
Providence carried the sharper attacking edge on the stat sheet, finishing with a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 2-1 lead in corner kicks.
Maine’s resistance started with goalkeeper Elena Barenberg, who turned away five efforts to keep the Black Bears in front for most of the night.
There were personal landmarks scattered across the pitch.
- Dungey’s incisive assist was her second of the season, delivered on the night she hit 60 career games.
- Defender Luise Reinwald also reached 60 career appearances.
- At the back, Meghan Bernetti made her 50th career start, while Bernetti and Olivia Grisdale both went the distance, playing all 90 minutes.
- Meadows’ first-half strike was her second goal of the campaign, and it carried extra weight for the program.
The draw marked Maine’s first result against a Big East opponent since a tie with St. John’s in 2007, breaking a long run of frustration in that matchup tier.
Even with the improved performance, the history between these two sides still leans heavily Providence’s way. Maine moves to 2-11-1 all-time against the Friars.
Records and what comes next
Maine leaves Rhode Island at 2-3-2, with something to build on. Providence, still unbeaten, sits at 2-0-6.
Next up for the Black Bears: a Sunday trip to Holy Cross for a 2 p.m. kickoff on Sept. 13.
If Thursday night is any indication, they’ll arrive carrying more than just tired legs. They’ll bring the proof that they can stand toe-to-toe with bigger-name programs and walk away with something to show for it.
