Halle Engle Leads Liberty to 1-0 Victory Over JMU
LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty had been here before with James Madison. Tight game. Heavy tackles. Clock bleeding away toward another draw.
This time, Halle Engle refused to let it happen.
With eight minutes left on a tense Thursday night at Osborne Stadium, Engle burst through the JMU back line and delivered the only goal in a 1-0 Liberty win, pushing the Lady Flames to 6-2-1 and a perfect 4-0 at home.
Engle Breaks the Stalemate
For 81 minutes, the match sat on a knife edge.
Liberty, missing starting center back Lauren Littleton, had to scrap against a physical Dukes side that refused to give them rhythm. JMU carried a 7-5 shot advantage into halftime, with both teams putting three efforts on frame, and neither willing to blink.
The pattern held deep into the second half. Fouls, duels, half-chances. The kind of game where one mistake or one flash of quality decides everything.
Engle supplied the flash.
Running level with the JMU back line, she timed her move as fellow forward Margaret Garner slipped in behind her in support. Garner picked her moment and threaded a pass into space. Engle accelerated, beat the charging goalkeeper to the ball, and tucked home what would stand as the winner in the 82nd minute.

Leja Slams the Door
Once in front, Liberty did not flinch.
James Madison managed just a single shot in the final eight minutes as the Lady Flames managed the clock and closed out the contest. At the heart of that effort stood goalkeeper Ainsley Leja, who turned in a season-best six saves to secure the shutout.
Leja, now 4-1-1 on the year, continues to anchor one of the stingiest defenses in Liberty’s recent history. Her season numbers tighten again: a 0.80 goals-against average and a .806 save percentage. This was her third full 90-minute clean sheet of the campaign, lifting her career tally to 24.
She wasn’t alone in the grind. Five Lady Flames went the distance for 90 minutes, holding their shape and composure without Littleton. Fresh face Dani Gubbels stepped into the starting lineup in the center of defense, earning the first start of her career and helping keep the Dukes off the board.
A Rivalry Tilts Liberty’s Way
The matchup with JMU has rarely been straightforward. The teams had drawn their last two meetings in regulation, with Liberty’s last edge coming in an overtime win back in 2019. This time, there would be no extra period.
With the result, Liberty improves to 4-8-2 all-time against the Dukes and owns a 3-2-2 mark in the last seven clashes between the programs. The Lady Flames also notch their second 1-0 win of the season, adding JMU to a list that already includes VCU.
Engle’s strike carried personal weight as well. It marked the 11th game-winning goal of her career and her third this season. She now leads the team with three goals, while Garner and Avenly Monteith each sit on matching season totals of six points (2g, 2a).
Senior Day and a Final Tune-Up
The win keeps Liberty perfect at home and sets the stage for a meaningful Sunday at Osborne Stadium.
Liberty (6-2-1) closes its non-conference schedule against Old Dominion (2-4), with kickoff set for 1 p.m. The program will honor 11 members of its 2026 Senior Class in a pre-game ceremony, a nod to the core that has helped build nights like this one.
Another shutout? Another late winner? With this defense and Engle in this kind of mood, the Lady Flames won’t mind if the script repeats.
