Manchester United in Talks for Bruno Fernandes' New Contract
Manchester United have started preliminary talks with Bruno Fernandes over a new contract, a clear statement that the club have no intention of letting their captain become the centrepiece of another transfer saga.
After a summer thick with rumours about a move away from the Premier League, United are now acting. According to Football Insider, the club are determined to secure the long-term future of the Portuguese playmaker and are ready to back that intent with a major financial commitment.
United trigger safety net as talks begin
Fernandes has around 10 months left on his current £220,000-a-week deal, but United hold a club option to extend it by a further year. That clause is expected to be activated as a fail-safe, buying the hierarchy more time and ensuring the midfielder does not drift into the final stretch of his contract with his market value exposed.
The extension option hands United leverage. But they do not want to rely on it alone. The plan is to reach a formal agreement on a fresh, long-term contract before the end of the calendar year, shutting down any lingering doubts about his future and killing off the steady drumbeat of transfer talk.
There is a strong incentive to move quickly. Fernandes is not short of admirers.
Galatasaray and Saudi money circle
Galatasaray have emerged as serious contenders for his signature. The Turkish giants are reported to be ready to put a four-year contract on the table, one that would effectively double his current salary. On top of that, a £3.5 million signing-on fee is said to be part of the package from Istanbul, a lucrative carrot for a player entering the final phase of his elite career.
It is not the first time Fernandes has stood close to the exit door. Last summer, his agent Miguel Pinho held high-level talks in Riyadh with Al-Hilal. The Saudi Pro League side were prepared to go to extraordinary lengths, with an offer worth around £200 million over three years. That move never materialised, but it underlined his status as one of the most coveted attacking midfielders in world football.
United know those kinds of numbers will not simply disappear from the market. Hence the urgency now.
Captain answers noise on the pitch
If anyone at Old Trafford needed reminding why the club are pushing so hard to keep him, Fernandes supplied the evidence again at the weekend. He ripped through Ipswich Town with a sensational hat-trick and an assist in a 5-2 win, a performance that arrived just days after he was crowned PFA Player of the Year.
It was a timely reminder. While speculation swirled around him in the summer, Fernandes has continued to carry United’s creative burden. Since arriving from Sporting CP in January 2020, he has racked up 110 goals and 109 assists in 329 appearances across all competitions, numbers that belong to a forward, not a midfielder.
Last season he set a new Premier League benchmark with 21 assists, reinforcing his reputation as one of the most inventive players the division has seen. Inside the dressing room and on the pitch, he remains the heartbeat of the side.
He has also been clear-eyed about what that responsibility means. Fernandes has spoken openly about the demands at Old Trafford and the standards required to wear the armband for a club of this size. United’s hierarchy are responding by trying to build the next phase of the project around him.
Centrepiece of the Carrick era
Under Michael Carrick’s leadership, United are attempting to reshape their identity. Through all the tactical tweaks and structural changes, one constant remains: the team still runs through Fernandes.
