Arsenal vs Chelsea: Defensive Concerns Ahead of Derby
Arsenal walk into Sunday’s derby with Chelsea sitting third in the Premier League and staring up at the teams above them. Win at the Emirates and the gap tightens. Drop points and the early-season chase suddenly feels a little longer.
They arrive with the division’s best defensive record: two games, no goals conceded. On paper, that looks rock solid. In reality, Mikel Arteta heads into the weekend juggling problems in the very area that has set the tone for their start.
Defensive doubts before Chelsea visit
The victory at Villa Park came at a cost. Both Bruno Guimaraes and Cristhian Mosquera were forced off, adding a layer of uncertainty to what had been a settled back line.
Arteta kept his cards close to his chest when asked for updates. On Bruno, he said the midfielder “had a knock against Villa in the previous game and he's being assessed. Hopefully tomorrow he will be okay for training.”
Mosquera’s situation sounds slightly less alarming. “It was more precaution than anything else, so we'll have to see in the session tomorrow how he feels,” Arteta explained.
Those decisions will shape how bold Arsenal can be against Chelsea. Lose one, and the balance shifts. Lose both, and the Premier League’s meanest defence suddenly looks makeshift on derby day.
Saliba still out, Timber steps closer
There is no quick fix coming from William Saliba. The centre-back remains out with a back injury and Arteta could not put a date on his return.
“We don't really know the amount of weeks he's going to be out because it's about a healing process… the progression has been really positive in the last few weeks, but we need to wait and see,” he said.
The more positive news comes with Jurrien Timber. Back in full training and, in Arteta’s words, “in a really good place,” the defender is edging towards involvement. A final call will be made after Saturday’s session, but his presence around the group alone lifts options and mood.
Rice expected to be fit, Konsa waits in the wings
Declan Rice, another casualty from the Villa win, has trained through the week and is expected to be available. That matters. Rice anchors the entire structure, and without him Arsenal’s midfield would look alarmingly light for a game of this intensity.
If Mosquera does not make it, Ezri Konsa is ready for a full debut at the heart of the defence. Arteta has already confirmed the defender is “certainly available in the squad.” Throwing him straight into a London derby would be a test of temperament as much as talent, but this is why he was brought in.
Attacking depth stripped back
While the focus has fallen on who might miss out at the back, the bigger long-term question hangs over Arsenal’s attack. The deadline-day exits of Gabriel Jesus, Ethan Nwaneri and record sale Gabriel Martinelli have left Arteta light in forward areas. None of them were directly replaced.
It leaves the manager leaning heavily on his remaining creators and finishers. There is quality there, no doubt, but not much margin for injury or loss of form as the season wears on.
How Arsenal could line up
Arteta is expected to stick with his 4-2-3-1 shape, with only a couple of key selection calls dictated by fitness.
Arsenal possible XI (4-2-3-1): Raya; White, Konsa, Gabriel, Calafiori; Lewis-Skelly, Rice; Saka, Odegaard, Tzolis; Havertz.
That side carries control, youth, and just enough edge to hurt Chelsea. It also carries risk if the knocks picked up at Villa linger longer than hoped.
Kick-off and TV details
Arsenal vs Chelsea kicks off at 16:30 on Sunday, 6 September 2026, at the Emirates Stadium. The game will be shown live in the UK on Sky Sports Main Event.
The table says it is early. The mood around north London says this already feels like a marker. With a trimmed attack, a patched-up defence and a derby on home turf, what kind of statement can Arsenal actually make?
